This game triggered one of our Action PRO betting systems, powered by Evan Abrams:

Short Road Dogs is a college football system that focuses on underdogs playing away from home in the regular season when the moneyline falls in a competitive range that signals a realistic chance to win outright.

These teams are visitors facing manageable matchups where the closing total is between 41 and 71, suggesting balanced scoring potential rather than extreme results.

Line movement on the total that stays within a narrow window from open to close reflects market stability and avoids heavy adjustments that could skew value.

By isolating games where the underdog is not severely overmatched but still priced attractively, the system captures overlooked spots where road teams can pull off wins more often than the odds imply, creating steady long-term value on the moneyline.

If you just looked at pre-season scouting reports on these two teams, you’d be all over Eastern Michigan in this game.

All indicators are pointing down for the Spartans (including ranking 137th in SP+ returning production), while all indicators are pointing up for the Eagles (including ranking 24th in SP+ returning production, rare for a MAC program).

The Spartans are working on a total rebuild, while the Eagles have a very experienced roster, quarterback, and head coach.

Stuckey even picked EMU to win the MAC this season:

Yet, we watched both of these teams play last week.

San Jose State gave USC a run for its money on the road last week. New quarterback Luke Weaver carved it up (234 yards, 2 TDs, .30 EPA per play) en route to 26 points and a respectable 52% Success Rate (73rd percentile). The Spartans were dominated by USC’s offense, but who isn’t going to get dominated by a Lincoln Riley offense? At least they allowed zero explosives.

Meanwhile, Eastern Michigan farted around at home against Sacramento State last week. The Eagles generated -0.06 EPA per play (28th percentile) and gained just 41% of available yards (a lower percentage than Sac State, who gained 43%). They struggled to run the ball, and they allowed Carson Conklin to rack up three big-time throws.

It might be too early to adjust our power ratings, but between these two teams, I feel like San Jose State has the better initial data point of the 2026 season.

It wasn’t too early for Collin Wilson to update his power ratings — he projects San Jose State as a favorite!

Pick: San Jose State ML (+100 or Better)

Indiana State vs Purdue Best Bet

By Joshua Nunn

This line opened Purdue -36.5 with a total set at 57.5. The first-half total comes in at 31.5, and I'm going to look to the Under here.

The Boilers' offensive line is young, and there will be a concerted effort to get the run fits figured out before Wake Forest comes to town next week.

A pair of freshmen could be starting or playing significant snaps, and guard Marques Easley must sit out the first half of this game for an incident that occurred at the end of last season during Purdue’s game with Indiana.

Between that and a new cast of receivers to break in, I expect that Purdue's passing game to be just a hair off, calling for more run action.

Indiana State isn't going to perform well offensively. The Sycamores couldn't run the ball well against SEMO, and the line couldn't hold up in pass protection.

I expect Indiana State to run the ball and play slow while trying to sustain possession and keep its defense off the field. The Sycamores might not score in this game at all, and it's unlikely they do so in the first half.

Last year, Purdue played an FCS team, and the defense was completely asleep at the wheel in the first half. The Boilermakers surrendered 227 total yards to Southern Illinois in the opening half but tightened up the rest of the way.

I can't envision Indiana State having anywhere close to that level of success in this contest. Purdue should be fully locked in defensively.

The Boilers will score points, but the drives will likely be methodical in nature and will feature a heavy run look, at times being executed by the quarterback.

Red zone offense was also such a problem last season, as Purdue scored just 18 touchdowns inside the opponent's 20-yard line on 37 attempts. If the Boilers are forced into two punts or field goal attempts, this first half stays under

Pick: 1H Under 31.5 or Better

Toledo vs Michigan State Best Bet

Cam Edwards Anytime Touchdown

By Doug Ziefel

Cam Edwards arrives in East Lansing off one of the best seasons any running back in the country had last year. He posted 1,240 yards and 15 touchdowns on 210 carries at UConn, a workload that ranked top-15 nationally in both categories.

New Michigan State head coach Pat Fitzgerald hasn't been shy about what he thinks Edwards can be, going as far as calling him a potential candidate for the best running back in the country.

It's clear from fall camp reporting that Edwards is the centerpiece of this retooled offense. The game plan lines up perfectly with that role.

Michigan State is a double-digit home favorite over Toledo, and with a new coordinator and dozens of new faces on the roster, it makes sense to stick to the ground game.

The expectation is that the Spartans will lean on the rushing attack to keep things simple in Week 1 rather than ask a first-year system to operate through the air right away.

That's exactly the kind of script that equals clock control, with short-yardage, goal-line opportunities for the lead back.

Combine a proven 15-touchdown workhorse with a favored team that's likely to run early and often to protect a new quarterback, and Edwards finding the end zone at least once is a great first click tonight.

Pick: Cam Edwards Anytime Touchdown (-170 or Better)

Stanford vs Miami Best Bet

Miami -24.5

Fresh Week 1 teams have had the advantage at the window over teams who played in Week 0. Per Bet Labs, fresh Week 1 teams have covered 149-110 over the previous 10 seasons.

With the exception of 2021, when post-COVID Week 0 teams went 15-7 against the spread, every season over the past 10 years has been heavily profitable.

The trend favors the Hurricanes in this spot, as they got plenty of game tape from the Cardinal victory over Hawai'i.

Mario Cristobal noted in his weekly presser that this opening game "had our attention since January."

The Action Network projections call for Miami to be favored by 28.5, well beyond the current market of -24. The scoring could start slow in this game. Stanford's offense may have exposed its entire playbook in Week 0, while Miami has questions on the offensive line that should see all players in the two-deep find the most cohesive five-man rotation.

Considering Stanford allowed Hawai'i to score 20 points in the fourth quarter, there's reason to think Darian Mensah, Malachi Toney, and Mark Fletcher will create enough explosives for the Hurricanes to cover.

Pick: Miami -24.5 or Better

Fresno State vs USC Best Bet

USC TT Over 39.5 or Better

Out goes the heat dome and, hopefully, in come a few more USC fans. Since opening at 49.5, this point total has moved to the over, now at 51.5. Fresno State also took a nudge of movement from its opening mark at +23.5.

Last week, USC ran with a plodding tempo, averaging 28.7 seconds per play (which would have ranked 119th in the country last year). Under offensive coordinator Josh Davis — who uses Matt Entz's system — Fresno averaged 28.8 seconds per play and 30.3 seconds per play across its final three games.

The goal is apparent: eat clock and control the ground. That's a strategy that works against Oregon State and Rice. But against a team with such a significant talent advantage, it results in three-and-outs.

USC's drive chart was extremely efficient last week — far more than what the final score suggests. Should that drive not have died at the four-year line, USC would have taken a 42-3 lead into the fourth quarter.

Of course, San Jose State is a weaker opponent by nearly two scores, according to post-Week 0 consensus power ratings.

Against a green pair of corners, even without Tanook Hines and/or Terrell Anderson (the former probably returns), Lincoln Riley's offense should move the ball with ease. USC doesn't need to run a quick pace, and neither does Fresno with this kind of drive efficiency.

But to avoid the late-game 23-point flash, I'm looking at USC's team total, which sits a bit too low.

Under Riley (since 2022), USC averages 56.9 points per game against non-power foes, the low-water mark being last week's 42-point outing that should have been 49. Fresno is a step up in defensive class, but not enough to actually slow this offense down.

Riley is a coach who will continue to score if given half a chance, especially against an inferior opponent where style points might matter in a crowded CFP fringe race (and games against the top three Big Ten teams on tap).

Pick: USC TT Over 39.5 or Better
