College Football Quarterback Transfers: Tracking Portal Destinations for 2024 QBs

The transfer portal is a hotly debated topic. Some people think it's good for college football, and others think it is killing the sport.

One thing that can't be debated is that it's highly entertaining to follow — but it's also incredibly difficult to keep track of.

That's where we come in.

Quarterback is the most important position in football, and it's also the most chaotic in the portal. We will update this article throughout the offseason with all of the latest news and updates for each team’s QB situation.

As the QB carousel spins and players announce their commitments, keep track of who is still looking for a job, and what jobs are still available. I tried to highlight each team’s main starter in 2023 and their most likely starter heading into 2024.

Trexler Ivey will return, but Max Brown is transferring in from Florida.

Mason Garcia is transferring to Austin Peay. Alex Flinn will return, but the Pirates need an upgrade. Katin Houser is transferring in from Michigan State and Jake Garcia is transferring from Missouri as potential options.

Casey Thompson (Oklahoma) and Daniel Richardson have both entered the portal. Cam Fancher is transferring in from Marshall.

Seth Henigan will return.

Tai Lavatai and Xavier Arline are both seniors. Braxton Woodson or Blake Horvath could take over.

Chandler Rogers (Cal) and Stone Earle (Abilene Christian) both transferred, but Chandler Morris is transferring in from TCU.

JT Daniels medically retired, but bowl starter AJ Padgett will return. EJ Warner is transferring in from Temple.

EJ Warner is transferring to Rice. Rutgers backup Evan Simon is transferring in.

Michael Pratt is expected to enter the NFL Draft, but backup Kai Horton has withdrawn from the portal and is returning to Tulane. Ty Thompson is also transferring in from Oregon.

Tulsa played four quarterbacks in 2023, but there's an expected competition between Williams and Francis in 2024. Braylon Braxton transferred to Marshall.

Jacob Zeno should have one more year of eligibility. Jalen Kitna is transferring in from Florida.

Byrum Brown will return to the Bulls. Gerry Bohanon will transfer to BYU.

Frank Harris is out of eligibility after a long college career. Eddie Lee Marburger served as his backup in 2023.

Thomas Castellanos will return to Boston College in 2024.

Redshirt freshman Fernando Mendoza started the final eight games, and now other quarterbacks Sam Jackson V and Ben Finley are in the transfer portal. We'll likely see a battle between Mendoza and North Texas transfer Chandler Rogers.

Cade Klubnik will return to Clemson.

Riley Leonard, the 2023 starter, entered the transfer portal and committed to Notre Dame. The Blue Devils replaced him with Maalik Murphy transferring in from Texas.

Jordan Travis will enter the 2024 NFL Draft. Backup Tate Rodemaker is transferring to Southern Miss. But former Clemson and Oregon State starter DJ Uiagalelei is transferring to Tallahassee.

Haynes King has two more years of eligibility. Zach Gibson is transferring to Georgia State.

Jack Plummer is out of eligibility. Tyler Shough transferred in from Texas Tech.

Tyler Van Dyke transferred to Wisconsin. FCS passing leader Reese Poffenbarger is transferring from University of Albany, and former Washington State QB Cam Ward decided to stay in college and transfer to Miami.

Brennan Armstrong is out of eligibility, while MJ Morris is transferring to Maryland. However, former Coastal Carolina signal-caller Grayson McCall has announced his commitment to the Wolfpack.

Drake Maye is heading to the NFL, but Max Johnson transferred in from Texas A&M.

Phil Jurkovec is out of eligibility, and the backups were ineffective. Eli Holstein will transfer in from Alabama.

After suffering a season-ending injury, Preston Stone is expected to be ready by next season.

Ashton Daniels is returning, but the Cardinal could probably use an upgrade.

Garrett Shrader is out of eligibility, but former five-star recruit and Ohio State starter Kyle McCord is transferring in.

True freshman Anthony Colandrea will return to Charlottesville.

Virginia Tech's Kyron Drones will return for another season.

Mitch Griffis is transferring to Marshall. Former Boise State and Louisiana Tech quarterback Hank Bachmeier transferred in, but the Deacs could still do better.

Luke Altmyer is returning, but Bret Bielema's squad could probably use an upgrade.

Brendan Sorsby transferred to Cincinnati, but 2022 MAC Offensive Player of the Year Kurtis Rourke is transferring in from Ohio.

Cade McNamara will return to Iowa.

Taulia Tagovailoa is out of eligibility at Maryland. but former four-star recruit MJ Morris is transferring in from NC State.

J.J. McCarthy is expected to enter the NFL Draft.

Noah Kim is transferring to Coastal Carolina, while Sam Leavitt is leaving for Arizona State and Katin Houser is off to East Carolina. New head coach Jonathan Smith brought promising freshman Aidan Chiles with him from Oregon State and Tommy Schuster is transferring from North Dakota.

Athan Kaliakmanis is transferring to Rutgers, but Max Brosmer is transferring in from New Hampshire.

Jeff Sims and Chubba Purdy (San Jose State) are transferring. Top recruit Dylan Raiola flipped his commitment to Nebraska.

Ben Bryant has run out of eligibility.

Kyle McCord is transferring to Syracuse, and Will Howard is transferring in from Kansas State. No. 1 incoming QB recruit Julian Sayin flipped his commitment from Alabama to Ohio State.

Bo Nix will head to the NFL, but Oklahoma transfer Dillon Gabriel committed to the Ducks. Oregon also received a commitment from former UCLA quarterback Dante Moore.

Drew Allar will return to Penn State.

Hudson Card is returning to Purdue.

Gavin Wimsatt will return to Piscataway. Evan Simon is transferring to Temple. Athan Kaliakmanis is transferring in from Minnesota.

Dante Moore has entered the transfer portal and committed to Oregon.

Caleb Williams will likely be the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft. Five-star Malachi Nelson unexpectedly transferred to Boise State. Backup Miller Moss looked excellent in the bowl game and it appears to be his job to lose, but Mountain West Freshman of the Year Jayden Maiava is transferring in from UNLV.

Michael Penix is heading to the NFL, while Dylan Morris is transferring to James Madison. Mississippi State transfer Will Rogers will remain committed to Washington. Four-star recruit Demond Williams is following Jedd Fisch to Washington.

Tanner Mordecai is out of eligibility, but Tyler Van Dyke is transferring in from Miami.

Noah Fifita will return to Arizona. Jayden de Laura, Brayden Dorman, and Demond Williams (Washington) have entered the transfer portal.

Trenton Bourguet is out of eligibility, meaning Jaden Rashada could take over.

Blake Shapen is transferring to Mississippi State, but Dequan Finn is transferring in from Toledo.

Kedon Slovis is out of eligibility, but former Baylor starter Gerry Bohanon is transferring in from South Florida and Treyson Bourguet is transferring in from Western Michigan.

Emory Jones has run out of eligibility.

Shedeur Sanders will return to Boulder for 2024.

Donovan Smith is returning, but Houston will have a new coaching staff led by former Tulane head coach Willie Fritz. Zeon Chriss is transferring in from Louisiana.

Rocco Becht is returning.

Jalon Daniels will return after an injury-riddled 2023 season.

Will Howard is transferring to Ohio State. Talented recruit Avery Johnson likely takes over under center.

Alan Bowman was granted a waiver for a seventh season in college football. Gunnar Gundy is in the transfer portal.

Chandler Morris is transferring to North Texas, but Josh Hoover is returning and will likely begin the season as the starter. Ken Seals is transferring in from Vanderbilt to compete with Hoover.

Tyler Shough transferred to Louisville, but Behren Morton returns.

John Rhys Plumlee has run out of eligibility, but KJ Jefferson is transferring in from Arkansas.

Bryson Barnes is transferring to Utah State and Nate Johnson is headed to Vanderbilt, but Cam Rising is expected to come back from an ACL injury.

Garrett Greene is returning.

Keyone Jenkins is returning, and Grayson James is transferring to Boston College.

Zion Webb is out of eligibility, but Logan Smothers is returning. Zion Turner will transfer in from UConn as well.

Kaidon Salter has withdrawn from the portal and will return to Liberty.

Hank Bachmeier is transferring to Wake Forest.

Nicholas Vattiato is returning, but there will be a new coaching staff after the firing of Rick Stockstill.

Diego Pavia announced he will transfer to Vanderbilt. Backups Blaze Berlowitz (committed to Vanderbilt) and Gavin Frakes (Committed to Virginia) are also transferring.

Keegan Shoemaker is returning and Jase Bauer is transferring in from Central Michigan.

Gavin Hardison is out of eligibility, and there will be a new coaching staff following the firing of Dana Dimel.

Austin Reed has run out of eligibility, but the experienced TJ Finley is transferring in after stops at LSU, Auburn, and Texas State.

Bryson Daily is returning.

Sam Hartman is heading to the NFL, but Duke star quarterback Riley Leonard is transferring in.

Joe Fagnano will likely start after returning from injury. Zion Turner is transferring to Jacksonville State.

Taisun Phommachanh is returning, but the Minutemen likely need an upgrade. Carlos Davis and Brady Olson are also in the portal.

Jeff Undercuffler is out of eligibility. Ben Finley is transferring in from Cal.

Kiael Kelly and Kadin Semonza are expected back.

Connor Bazelak could come back, but the Falcons will likely need an upgrade.

Cole Snyder is transferring to Eastern Michigan.

Jase Bauer is transferring to Sam Houston. Joey Labas will transfer in from Iowa.

Austin Smith is in the portal, but Drew Viotto is transferring in from Minnesota and Cole Snyder is transferring from Buffalo.

Michael Alaimo has entered the transfer portal. JD Sherrod will transfer in from Troy.

Brett Gabbert will return to Oxford.

Taylen Green is set to transfer to Arkansas, but former 5-star Malachi Nelson is transferring in from USC.

Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi is returning, but Clay Millen is transferring to Florida.

Mikey Keene is set to return, while Logan Fife is transferring to Montana.

Brayden Schager has decided to return to Hawaii after initially entering the transfer portal.

Brendon Lewis and AJ Bianco are returning, but the Wolf Pack need an upgrade. Former Florida State and Nebraska QB Chubba Purdy flipped his commitment from San Jose State to Nevada after the coaching change for the Spartans.

Dylan Hopkins is out of eligibility.

Jalen Mayden has run out of eligibility. Former four-star recruit AJ Duffy is transferring in from Florida State.

Chevan Cordeiro is out of eligibility and won't return to the Spartans. Nebraska transfer Chubba Purdy was committed for a short time but flipped to Nevada after the coaching change.

Jayden Maiava decided to transfer to USC. Matthew Sluka will transfer in from Holy Cross (FCS).

Cooper Legas and McCae Hillstead are returning, while Spencer Petras transfers in from Iowa and Bryson Barnes is transferring from Utah.

Andrew Peasley is out of eligibility.

DJ Uiagalelei (Florida State) and Aidan Chiles (Michigan State) both transferred. Gevani McCoy is transferring in from Idaho (FCS) and Gabarri Johnson is transferring in from Missouri.

Starter Cam Ward decided to enter the NFL Draft.

Jalen Milroe will return to Alabama. Incoming 5-star freshman Julian Sayin transferred to Ohio State after Nick Saban's retirement.

Taylen Green is transferring in from Boise State, while 2023 starter KJ Jefferson transferred to Central Florida.

Payton Thorne is returning, but Auburn needs an upgrade. Robby Ashford is transferring to South Carolina.

Graham Mertz will return,. Backup Max Brown transferred to Charlotte, but Clay Millen is transferring in from Colorado State and will likely backup Mertz.

Carson Beck will likely return, while backup Brock Vandagriff transferred to Kentucky.

Devin Leary is out of eligibility, but Brock Vandagriff transferred in from Georgia.

Jayden Daniels will head to the NFL, allowing Garrett Nussmeier to take over. AJ Swann is transferring in from Vanderbilt.

Will Rogers is transferring to Washington, but Blake Shapen will transfer in from Baylor.

Brady Cook will return to the Tigers. Backups Dylan Laible, Gabarri Johnson (Oregon State), and Jake Garcia (East Carolina) have entered the transfer portal.

With Dillon Gabriel transferring to Oregon, five-star Jackson Arnold will take over as QB1 in Norman.

Jaxson Dart is set to return to Oxford.

Spencer Rattler is leaving for the NFL, while Colten Gauthier (Gardner-Webb) and Tanner Bailey entered the transfer portal. Davis Beville will transfer in from Oklahoma and Robby Ashford is transferring from Auburn.

Joe Milton is expected to enter NFL Draft, leaving five-star Nico Iamaleava to take over.

Quinn Ewers is expected to return to Austin. Backup Maalik Murphy transferred to Duke with top-recruit Arch Manning waiting in the wings.

Max Johnson will transfer to UNC, but Conner Weigman is set to return to A&M.

AJ Swann (Vanderbilt), Ken Seals (TCU), and Walter Taylor (Colorado) all entered the transfer portal. New Mexico State star Diego Pavia announced he will transfer to Vanderbilt. Utah backup Nate Johnson and New Mexico State backup Blaze Berlowitz are also transferring to Vandy.

Joey Aguilar is set to return. Ryan Burger, who started the 2023 season as QB1, will transfer to Liberty.

Jaylen Raynor will return to the Red Wolves.

Grayson McCall has committed to NC State, while Jarrett Guest is still in the portal. However, Noah Kim will transfer in from Michigan State.

Davis Brin is out of eligibility.

Darren Grainger has run out of eligibility. Former Akron and Georgia Tech quarterback Zach Gibson is transferring in.

Jordan McCloud has transferred to Texas State, but Dylan Morris is transferring in from Washington.
