Colorado State vs UTSA College Football Preview
Colorado State Rams Betting Preview
The Colorado State Rams enter off a 41-23 loss to BYU, but there was plenty in that box score that makes me want to continue buying this offense. HC Jim Mora has established in his early tenure that this is a team that's going to put up points.
Quarterback Hauss Hejny has been the catalyst. He's completing nearly 70% of his passes while the Rams are averaging 281 passing yards per game, 7.5 YPA, and 0.41 PPA/Pass.
While Hejny has recently been listed as doubtful, backup K'saan Farrar at least has some limited experience from his time as a reserve at UConn.
Colorado State has already thrown 11 touchdown passes through three games, so expect its offense to continue humming against the UTSA Roadrunners.
The Rams are also much more balanced than those passing numbers suggest, averaging 177 rushing yards per game and an explosive six yards per carry. This is exactly why the Rams will be able to put up points early and often.
The Roadrunners rank 117th in rushing success rate allowed and 115th in line yards, while Colorado State ranks 11th nationally in rushing explosiveness. That seems like last week’s result against Texas should be taken lightly.
If UTSA commits extra bodies to the box, Hejny has already shown he's capable of making defenses pay over the top.
The Rams also convert 50% of their third downs and rank 12th nationally in PPA on passing downs, so this isn't an offense that needs to live entirely on early-down explosives.
UTSA Roadrunners Betting Preview
UTSA just scored six points against Texas, but I'm throwing that box score directly in the trash.
This is an entirely different defensive matchup, particularly on the ground. UTSA owns a 54% rushing success rate, which ranks 11th nationally, while Colorado State's defense is allowing a 49% rushing success rate, ranking 126th.
Colorado State is also allowing 3.54 line yards per carry, which ranks 132nd nationally, and BYU exploited that weakness last week when LJ Martin erupted for 176 yards and three touchdowns.
UTSA has multiple paths to be explosive here, and I like backing teams with an experienced QB like Owen McCown.
If the Roadrunners can consistently stay ahead of the chains on the ground, the entire playbook opens up, and this game can turn into a possession-for-possession affair.
Colorado State also ranks 125th in passing success rate allowed, so there should be opportunities through the air once UTSA establishes the run.
This is setting up to be a massive shootout in the Alamodome.

Colorado State vs UTSA Pick, Betting Analysis
This total opened at 56.5 and has already been steamed to 58.5. But let's buy the steam.
Colorado State's offense has produced a 46% rushing success rate and 47% passing success rate while generating 11 passing touchdowns through three games. The problem is that the defense can't get anyone off the field, which is exactly what I want.
Colorado State allows a 47.1% success rate overall, 48.8% rushing success rate, and 50% passing success rate. That's a nasty profile against a UTSA offense sitting 11th nationally in rushing success rate.
Finishing drives also points toward touchdowns rather than stalled possessions. Colorado State is averaging 4.78 points per scoring opportunity, while its defense allows 3.94. UTSA is at 3.36 offensively, but that number has been dragged down by Texas.
The havoc numbers are pretty stunning, too. UTSA's defense generates just 13.3% havoc, which should allow Hejny to operate from relatively clean pockets and continue attacking downfield.
The market has moved for a reason. I'll follow the steam and bet on both offenses getting into the 30s.
Pick: Over 58.5
