Eastern Michigan Eagles Betting Preview: Blue Collar Football

Eastern Michigan is 1-2 and just got smacked by Michigan State, 35-7, which isn't exactly the type of box score that's going to have recreational bettors lining up to grab the points.

That's perfectly fine with me.

The Eagles actually trailed Michigan State only 14-7 at halftime before things got away from them, and their underlying defensive profile has been considerably better than the final scores would suggest.

Against FBS competition, Eastern Michigan is allowing -0.14 EPA/Play and ranks 13th nationally in Adjusted EPA/Play defensively, which gives me something tangible to work with when I'm catching more than three touchdowns against an offense that hasn't shown an ability to consistently create explosives.

The offense is admittedly ugly, as Eastern sits outside the top 100 in EPA/Play with a Success Rate below 38%, but this isn't a spot where I need the Eagles to consistently march 75 yards.

Give me a couple of sustained drives, avoid the back-breaking turnovers and find 10-to-14 points somewhere along the way.

Chris Creighton's teams have made a living dragging more talented opponents into ugly football games, and ugly is beautiful when I'm holding +23.5.

I think the Eagles will be able to muck this up against the Badgers and keep this within three touchdowns.

Wisconsin Badgers Betting Preview: Numbers Aren't Adding Up

Wisconsin got exactly what it needed last week against Western Illinois, cruising to a 36-9 victory after getting blasted by Notre Dame in its opener.

I'm not interested in buying the get-right game.

Western Illinois represents such a dramatic drop in competition that I'm much more interested in what Wisconsin showed against an actual FBS opponent, when the Badgers managed just 13 points and struggled to generate consistent offensive efficiency.

The underlying profile isn't particularly encouraging, either, with Wisconsin carrying a negative net EPA/Play and negative Success Rate margin against FBS competition. Yes, it was against Notre Dame, but the numbers didn't improve much after their performance last week.

That's a tough offense for me to trust when I'm being asked to lay north of three touchdowns.

The Badgers also aren't completely healthy entering this matchup, as WR Malachi Coleman, RB Juju Pope and WR Jaylon Domingeaux are all listed as questionable.

Wisconsin may very well control this game from start to finish, but controlling a game and covering four touchdowns are two very different things. I just don't envision it happening against this underrated Eastern Michigan defense.

Eastern Michigan vs Wisconsin Pick, Betting Analysis

This isn't a bet that requires me to convince you Eastern Michigan is secretly good. It requires Wisconsin to prove that it deserves to lay this kind of lumber.

There's nothing from the last couple of weeks of data points suggesting I should be running to back the Badgers here.

If I can grab +23.5 or better with a defense sitting 13th nationally in Adjusted EPA/Play against an offense that has yet to demonstrate consistent explosiveness against FBS competition, I'll gladly hold my nose and take the ugly 'dog.

This also feels like a game where Wisconsin can dominate the box score without ever truly threatening the number. This offense has way too many questions still.

Maybe the Badgers lead 20-3 entering the fourth quarter, Eastern puts together one decent drive against a softer defensive look and suddenly we're sitting on a 27-10 final that was never particularly competitive, but cashes all the same.

If +24 pops up, take it. I'll be waiting for one. But I'm still comfortable taking +23.5.

Give me the 'dog here to lay this out.

Pick: Eastern Michigan +23.5
