Houston Cougars Betting Preview
College football schedules are built years in advance. This home-and-home was scheduled back in 2016 when Houston was a member of the American with no plans to move to the Big 12.
In 2016, that's a sensible schedule and a credit to the athletic department for sticking with it. As a result, Georgia Southern hosts a power-conference team for the first time.
Houston comes off an emotional loss at Texas Tech in which Conner Weigman came up a literal inch short of tying the game on a two-point conversion with under a minute left. Somehow, the takeaway from that game was that Houston no longer belonged in the AP Top 25 (for whatever reason).
The Cougars looked terrific defensively, holding Tech to just seven points after the first drive of the second half.
Both interceptions were exceptional — the first, Thomas Castellanos couldn't throw the ball out of bounds on a throwaway, and the second was an absurd one-handed snag — but the unit really looked strong on the road.
Jalen Mayo and Will James are as good a cornerback duo as you'll find in the Big 12.
Weigman continues to look like one of the stronger veteran presences in the country. He pushed the ball downfield with the game on the line, relying on tight end Patrick Overmyer, and stole a late first-half touchdown on a downfield seam. All of this is happening without top target Stephon Johnson, too.
The run game looks steady under both Makhi Hughes and Re'Shaun Sanford II.
So, while the narrative turns against Houston despite a razor-thin loss in a tough road environment against the Big 12 favorite, I'll continue to back the Cougars. This is a very good football team.
Georgia Southern Eagles Betting Preview
In his 14th and final season in college football, QB Max Johnson should be letting it fly. Instead, he's stuck in a bad offense throwing check-downs and screens to nobody for a paltry six yards per attempt.
Georgia Southern's offense was completely stifled by Clemson, and it can't buy an explosive play on the ground or through the air. The offense managed to find 27 points against Jacksonville State, but seven of those came on a short field following a fumble.
It's a team that plays in far too many third downs (17; only five teams play more) and converts too few of them.
The biggest problem with Ryan Aplin's offense is that it's just too inconsistent. During his tenure, Georgia Southern has scored 40+ six times and less than 20 five times (four of those came against non-power-conference foes).
Johnson hasn't shown himself to be a prolific passer this season, stifling Aplin's Air Raid approach (Southern attempts a pass on nearly 60% of its snaps, 11th-most).
Currently, the defense doesn't force enough negatives to allow the offense much wiggle room. Despite running 25 more offensive snaps, Georgia Southern allowed 31 points to Jacksonville State.
That came thanks to a steady dose of chunk yardage, both on the ground and through the air, to a team that's significantly regressed from last season.
While a glance might suggest a tight loss against a good team from last year, that Jacksonville State defeat will haunt this team in November.
But the home-field advantage in Statesboro under Clay Helton is very real. In addition, being geographically removed from most of the rest of college football, Southern is 18-6 ATS when playing at home (35-14 ATS since 2018!) — not bad for playing in the Prettiest Little Stadium in America.
Houston vs Georgia Southern Pick, Betting Analysis
Houston opened as a -20.5 road favorite, and that number has been bet down to -18.5 (and as low as -17.5 this week).
The over/under ticked up from 54.5 to 56.5, through an ultra-key figure of 55.
Coming off a straight-up loss, Willie Fritz is 7-3 ATS at Houston and 41-23 ATS in his career. At home, Helton is 18-6 ATS, and Georgia Southern is 35-14 ATS since 2018 — some heavy-hitting numbers in actionable situations.
With such a prolific opponent in town, expect Allen E. Paulson Stadium to be filled to capacity and for it to be an electric environment.
This is a matchup between two veteran coaches, and few are more reliable than Fritz. He has the superior roster and not much to look ahead to on the horizon (vs. UCF, at Kansas State). Expect a get-right spot for Houston.
The Cougars have gotten off to multiple quick starts led by the defense's ability to generate takeaways. They built a 26-7 lead against Oregon State and notched an interception on the first play and subsequently led 17-14 at half at Texas Tech.
(Notwithstanding turning Southern University into a fine paste in Week 2, leading 49-0 at half.)
Fritz knows how to utilize his roster to get ahead early.
Weigman and Houston handled the pressures of Jones AT&T Stadium calmly last week — though Paulson Stadium should be at its best, it pales in comparison to the noise level in Lubbock.
Expect Houston to jump out to an early lead as it looks to right the ship.
