Indiana State vs Purdue College Football Preview

Indiana State Sycamores Betting Preview: Looking to Step Up
Indiana State has suffered through below-average performances for the last six seasons, as head coach Curt Mallory just hasn't regained program momentum after a seven-win season in 2018.
Quarterback play has been inconsistent, and injuries have been tough. Despite all that, 2025 had some bright spots, most notably a stunning road victory over South Dakota State as a 31.5-point underdog.
The Sycamores welcome back quarterback Elijah Owens after getting injured in just the second game of last season. Fourteen other starters return, so this could be the toughest and most competitive Indiana State team we have seen in a while.
Indiana State dropped its opener against Southeast Missouri State by a final score of 23-21. Owens looked sharp, throwing for 288 yards with a pair of touchdowns.
ISU had five explosive passes and the receivers looked good, but the offensive line play was poor.
The Sycamores ran for just 58 yards on 31 attempts while giving up four sacks and 11 tackles for loss. The offensive line returned four starters but still struggled badly in standard downs.
The defense played well at times but gave up some explosive passes. The Sycamores returned seven defensive linemen who played a decent amount of snaps, and they contained the run game well, but the pass rush was ineffective.
The secondary and linebacker rooms are experienced, so this defense should be better this season as a whole.
Purdue Boilermakers Betting Preview: [Editorial Language]
Purdue enters Year 2 under Barry Odom with much more certainty about the identity and makeup of this team.
Quarterback Ryan Browne has elevated his play in fall camp and should be much more comfortable in the system under second-year offensive coordinator Josh Henson.
The running back room has a pair of nice options in Minnesota transfer Fame Ijeboi and Texas transfer Jerrick Gibson.
The receiver room is a complete clean sweep with portal-infused talent brought in this spring. Xavier Townsend, Bisi Owens and Asaad Waseem will likely garner the bulk of the target share in the offense.
The offensive line battled injuries in fall camp, most notably to left tackle Joey Tanona, who's considered the Boilers' best offensive lineman. Two freshmen are competing for starting positions, and needless to say, this unit needs to find its rhythm quickly in the opener.
The defense brings Kevin Kane over from Minnesota to run the 3-3-5 stack defense, but each level is going through a rebuild.
Elo Modozie and Rodney Lora transfer in, joining CJ Madden, Trey Smith and Ian Jeffries, who round out a defensive line that should have success against Indiana State.
The linebacker group has some talent with Charles Correa and Anthony Speca scheduled to start, and bringing Mister Clark in from FIU was a huge addition in this scheme.
The secondary has some experience and will perform better so long as the Boilermakers can create more pressure up front.

Indiana State vs Purdue Pick, Betting Analysis
This line opened Purdue -36.5 with a total set at 57.5. The first-half total comes in at 31.5, and I'm going to look to the under here.
The Boilers' offensive line is young, and there will be a concerted effort to get the run fits figured out before Wake Forest comes to town next week.
A pair of freshmen could be starting or playing significant snaps, and guard Marques Easley must sit out the first half of this game for an incident that occurred at the end of last season during Purdue’s game with Indiana.
Between that and a new cast of receivers to break in, I expect that Purdue's passing game to be just a hair off, calling for more run action.
Indiana State isn't going to perform well offensively. The Sycamores couldn't run the ball well against SEMO, and the line couldn't hold up in pass protection.
I expect Indiana State to run the ball and play slow while trying to sustain possession and keep its defense off the field. The Sycamores might not score in this game at all, and it's unlikely they do so in the first half.
Last year, Purdue played an FCS team, and the defense was completely asleep at the wheel in the first half. The Boilermakers surrendered 227 total yards to Southern Illinois in the opening half but tightened up the rest of the way.
I can't envision Indiana State having anywhere close to that level of success in this contest. Purdue should be fully locked in defensively.
The Boilers will score points, but the drives will likely be methodical in nature and will feature a heavy run look, at times being executed by the QB.
Red zone offense was also such a problem last season, as Purdue scored just 18 touchdowns inside the opponent's 20-yard line on 37 attempts. If the Boilers are forced into two punts or field goal attempts, this first half stays under.
Pick: 1H Under 31.5
