Miami (OH) vs UMass College Football Preview

Miami (OH) arrives in western Massachusetts at 2-3 and is looking to stop a skid that has been more about late-game collapses than a lack of firepower. The RedHawks blew a 21-point lead in a 35-31 loss to Cincinnati, then dropped a heartbreaker to Bowling Green last week, and that follows a 59-14 opening-week blowout at Pitt.

Through all of it, the offense has been dependable enough to keep Miami in games: the RedHawks have scored at least 20 points in four straight games, including 45 against Holy Cross, 31 against Cincinnati and 24 against UConn, and they average 22.3 points and 5.8 yards per play against FBS competition. The problem is the other side of the ball.

Miami's defense ranks 113th nationally in points allowed (34.8 per game), 124th in yards allowed (459.0 per game), and 120th in yards per play allowed (6.6), and opponents have converted half of their third downs against it. Miami is a 2.5-point road favorite, with the total having slid from a consensus opener of 49.5 down to 47.5.

UMass is the better story. The Minutemen are 4-1 a year after going 0-12, and the 37-21 win at Rutgers to open the season ended a 16-game losing streak that dated back to 2024. Joe Harasymiak's team outscored its first four opponents 145-51, scored 36 or more in each of those wins, and went 14-for-14 in the red zone, with quarterback William Watson III efficient (9-of-10 for 152 yards against Sacred Heart) and Curtis Kimmons IV anchoring the ground game.

The Minutemen were also one of only 20 teams nationally without a lost fumble through four games. The first loss came last week, when Eastern Michigan scored 38 points and piled up 411 yards, a reminder that this defense can be stretched.

Still, UMass has been productive on the other side of the ball, averaging 28.7 points and 6.2 yards per play against FBS opponents, the 33rd-best yards-per-play mark in the country.

Conditions look good for offense in Amherst, with a sunny forecast, temperatures in the mid-to-upper 60s and a light west wind around 7 mph.

Miami (OH) vs UMass Pick, Betting Analysis

This is a textbook fit for the 'Beware of Falling Totals' system.

The total opened at a consensus of 49.5 and has been bet down two full points to 47.5, a meaningful move but not an extreme one, which is exactly the range where the market tends to overstate how much scoring will drop.

The likely drivers are easy to spot: Miami's late-game collapses and a general sense that two MAC teams will grind it out. But nothing about the game dynamics has actually changed. There's no injury of note, no wind or precipitation in the forecast, and the matchup profile is the same one that produced a 49.5 opener. That points to public overreaction rather than a real shift in expected scoring, and it leaves value on the Over at the lower number.

The matchup itself backs that up, and it starts with Miami's defense. A unit that ranks in the bottom 15 nationally in yards allowed and yards per play is facing an offense that has been efficient and has protected the football. UMass has scored at least 36 in four of five games this season, and its red-zone execution means that when drives stall, they still produce points.

Miami hasn't shown it can get stops against competent offenses, as the 59 at Pitt and 35 for Cincinnati attest, which sets up well for Watson and Kimmons to keep the scoreboard moving.

Miami doesn't need to be explosive to help this Over cash either. The RedHawks have reached at least 20 in each of their last four games, and they're facing a UMass defense that just surrendered 38 points and 411 yards to a MAC opponent.

UMass is far better than its 2025 reputation, but the 5.0 yards per play it allows against FBS opponents is decent, not dominant, and the Eastern Michigan game showed what happens when an offense commits to moving the ball against it. A final in the neighborhood of 27-24, which several projections have, clears this total comfortably, and it would have cleared the 49.5 opener as well.

The one real risk to the Over is pace. If UMass leans on Kimmons and the ground game to run the clock and keeps its turnover-free play going, there will be fewer possessions than the raw offensive numbers suggest.

Although Miami's defense has been the kind of unit that gives up quick, long scoring drives, 47.5 is a number two offenses that can both reach the 20s will get past.

Pick: Over 47.5
