Nebraska vs Illinois College Football Preview
Nebraska Cornhuskers Betting Preview
Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule got off to a phenomenal start to his fourth year at the helm, leading the Cornhuskers to a 5-0 overall record throughout the first five weeks of the College Football season. Rhule’s bunch has completely spiraled from its elite early-season form, dropping three in a row in Big Ten play to the likes of Indiana, Oregon, and Washington.
Now, Nebraska has its back against the wall heading into its Week 10 matchup with Illinois in what is surely an absolute must-win game for both teams. The Cornhuskers started the season with a bang behind stellar play under center from Senior QB Anthony Colandrea, who led a Nebraska offense that was scoring over 43 PPG over the first five games.
Since thrashing over Maryland in Week 6, the ‘Huskers offense has collectively averaged less than 14 points per game over its last three contests — In those three games, Colandrea has thrown just two touchdown passes compared to a whopping five interceptions over that same duration.
While the Cornhuskers’ offense is struggling mightily over the last few weeks, Nebraska’s defensive unit has actually fared rather well, boasting one of the most efficient defenses in all of college football this season. Their defense has surrendered just 270.8 YPG and 15.6 PPG to its opponents on average throughout its first eight games — ranking 8th and 14th in the FBS, respectively.
The Cornhuskers will require a stout effort on both sides of the football if they are to take down an Illinois squad in red-hot form, having rattled off three straight victories heading into Week 10.
Illinois Fighting Illini Betting Preview
Illinois enters its Week 10 matchup with Big Ten foe Nebraska with a ton of momentum, with three consecutive wins under its belt after an underwhelming 2-3 start to its 2026-27 campaign.
Aside from the loss against Ohio State, the Fighting Illini lost two games at home to Duke and Purdue — both of which had Bielema’s bunch in a tough spot heading into several tough conference matchups. Fortunately for the Illini, three straight victories heading into Week 10 will undoubtedly give them the confidence they need to prevail over a talented Nebraska squad.
Senior QB Katin Houser leads a decent offensive unit that ranks 62nd in the entire country in yards and 65th in points with 29 per game on average — He has anchored this Illini offense with 1663 passing yards over the team’s first eight games, also having thrown 13 touchdown passes in the process.
5 '11 tailback Aidan Laughery has played a massive role for Bielema’s rushing attack as well, with the fifth-year Senior having racked up 560 yards on the ground, and having done so quite efficiently with 6.3 YPC, ranking 33rd in the entire country.
Illinois wideout Collin Dixon has been an exceptional playmaker in his third year with the team, and emerged as the clear primary target for Houser very early on in the season. Dixon has corralled an impressive 60 passes from Houser this season for 781 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns, ranking inside the top-11 in all three aforementioned statistical categories.
Illinois’ defensive unit boasts a 3-3-5 schematic structure that features some sizable athleticism in its secondary, with Safety Matthew Bailey leading the team in both solo tackles and interceptions.
The Illini also have a quite physical front seven, which will certainly be looking to dominate in the trenches and bring some pressure towards Nebraska's QB.

Nebraska vs Illinois Pick, Betting Analysis
Despite the Illini playing in front of a home crowd and being the far hotter team heading into Friday night’s matchup, I think Nebraska is the better team on both sides of the ball, and this looks like a prime “get-right” spot for the ‘Huskers to break their three-game skid.
Yes, Illinois has won three straight games, but there are glaring holes throughout its offense that become far more apparent when opposing defenses gameplan to shut off Dixon, thus forcing Houser to target some largely unimpressive other targets.
The Cornhusker offense is also highly efficient, ranking inside the top-20 in college football in third-down conversion rate, just shy of 50%.
Illinois also has one of the worst red-zone defenses in college football, an area where the Cornhuskers offense thrives.
That said, while I expect Nebraska to ultimately reign supreme on Friday night, I have no interest in backing the Cornhuskers covering 4 or 4.5 points in what should be a hostile road environment in Urbana-Champaign.
