Rutgers Scarlet Knights Betting Preview: As Bad As It Gets

Rutgers heads to Madison at 2-6 following a 28-21 loss to Michigan, and while the Scarlet Knights deserve some credit for moving the football against one of the Big Ten's better defenses, I'm having a difficult time trusting this offense against Wisconsin given the uncertainty surrounding its two most important offensive contributors.

QB Dylan Lonergan missed last week's matchup and remains questionable, while WR KJ Duff is also dealing with an injury that could prevent him from playing Saturday.

Lonergan has thrown for 1,066 yards and 10 TDs in six starts, while Duff ranks fifth nationally with nine receiving TDs and 13th with 96.8 receiving YPG.

Duff has been responsible for a substantial portion of Rutgers' explosive passing production, and his potential absence would leave the Scarlet Knights without their most dangerous downfield weapon. If Lonergan can't go, QB AJ Surace would likely make another start.

Surace helped Rutgers generate 21 points against Michigan, including an 80-yard TD pass to WR Jourdin Houston, but I'm not particularly interested in projecting that type of explosive production against Wisconsin. The Badgers have been outstanding at preventing opponents from generating chunk gains, allowing an explosive play on just 9.3% of defensive snaps.

Rutgers' overall offensive efficiency isn't particularly encouraging, either. The Scarlet Knights rank 107th nationally in adjusted EPA/Play at -0.036, while generating just 3.54 points per scoring opportunity.

RB Antwan Raymond has been productive, averaging 91.6 rushing YPG, but Wisconsin's defensive front presents a difficult matchup. If the Badgers can limit Raymond on early downs, Rutgers could be forced into obvious passing situations without its starting QB or top WR.

I also have Rutgers on quit watch, especially since HC Greg Schiano is practically fired at this rate. I would not be stunned to see Rutgers shut out here.

Wisconsin Badgers Betting Preview: Bounce Back Badgers

Wisconsin is coming off an embarrassing 30-0 loss to Iowa, but I'm much more interested in the Badgers' defensive production than their offensive struggles.

Wisconsin ranks 16th nationally in adjusted EPA/Play allowed at -0.087, while surrendering a 42.1% defensive Success Rate.

The Badgers are also allowing just 18.3 PPG and 4.77 YPP. Those are excellent numbers, particularly considering the quality of competition Wisconsin has faced throughout its Big Ten schedule.

The biggest advantage comes in preventing explosives. Wisconsin is allowing an explosive play on only 9.3% of defensive snaps, ranking fourth nationally.

That's an enormous advantage against a Rutgers offense that has relied heavily on Duff to create downfield production. The Badgers are also allowing just 2.91 points per scoring opportunity.

Even when opponents successfully move the football into scoring territory, Wisconsin has consistently forced FGs and empty possessions rather than allowing TDs. The defensive front has also been effective at preventing opponents from establishing offensive rhythm on early downs.

Wisconsin's opponent-adjusted passing defense ranks among the nation's best, allowing approximately 5.9 yards per pass attempt. That creates a difficult matchup for Surace if Lonergan remains sidelined.

It will need to continue limiting explosives, winning early downs, and preventing Rutgers from consistently finishing drives. That's been the foundation of their defensive success all season.

If we see a typical Badgers’ defensive performance, they should hold the Scarlet Knights at bay.

Rutgers vs Wisconsin Pick, Betting Analysis

I'm much more interested in attacking Rutgers' TT Under than laying Wisconsin -16.5.

The Badgers have been outstanding defensively, but their offense has been inconsistent enough that I'm not particularly interested in trusting them to create a three-score margin.

The defensive matchup is juicy with Duff and Lonergan questionable. Wisconsin ranks 16th in adjusted EPA/Play allowed, fourth in Explosive Play Rate allowed and is surrendering only 2.91 points per scoring opportunity.

Rutgers, meanwhile, ranks 107th in offensive EPA/Play and generates just 3.54 points per scoring opportunity. Their offense does not capitalize in the red area, and I expect that to continue on Saturday.

Lonergan remains questionable, while Duff's availability is also uncertain after leaving the Michigan game.

If Rutgers is forced to start Surace without Duff, the Scarlet Knights could struggle to create explosives against a defense already allowing fewer than 5 YPP. Even if Lonergan returns, there's no guarantee he'll be operating at full capacity.

The market has Wisconsin favored by approximately 17 points, with a full-game total around 45.5.

I expect Wisconsin to control this matchup defensively, regardless of whether its offense produces enough points to cover the spread. I'll trust the Badgers' defense rather than their offense.

Pick: Rutgers Team Total Under 13.5 Points(-104, FanDuel)
