Welcome to the FBS, Sacramento State!
I’ve been very public about how bearish I am on Sac State this year and for years to come.
It took a horrific deal to join the FBS after multiple rejections — even shouldering 100% of the costs, including all team and opponent travel — and it brings a roster ill-prepared to make the jump to the next level.
Head coach Brennan Marion took a promotion and his Go-Go offense to Colorado, ushering in the Alonzo Carter era.
Carson Conklin returns after a year-long hiatus at Fresno State. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Conklin isn’t overly inspiring, landing 132nd on The Athletic QB tiers, in which personnel and GMs in the FBS were polled.
Both top rushers from last year depart, and depth across this team limits its ceiling long-term. I just don’t buy this as an FBS-level roster, leading to a regular-season win total bet at under 5.5.
Now, the team begins its foray into MACtion in Ypsilanti.
The Hornets’ opponent is about a .500 football team at home over the last half-decade, but the travel to Ypsilanti is logistically expensive and cumbersome.
A slow start may be in order, as a large portion of the roster (particularly on the offensive line) is a mash of power conference transfers with little to no experience.
With a brand-new system in place from top to bottom, growing pains are inevitable for an all-new program.
Offensively, we can expect a pro spread system from offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau and a 4-2 front look from defensive coordinator Adam Clark.
Eastern Michigan Eagles Betting Preview: Plenty Coming Back
Injuries riddled this Eastern Michigan roster last year, especially on defense, leading to a disappointing 4-8 season and a ranking of 110th in Points Per Drive.
On a positive note, Michigan State/Coastal Carolina transfer Noah Kim found new life, leading the MAC with 2,817 passing yards. Kim returns along with his top four receiving options, so this offense should continue to move the ball efficiently.
Defensive coordinator Ben Needham stepped away from football, so head coach Chris Creighton promoted Tate Omli and Kasey Teegardin to co-DCs.
One benefit of playing so many players due to injuries is that those new players are seasoned to the FBS. Twelve different defensive backs made a start, so this unit should now be deep with experience, if not also talent.
APEX Bryce Llewellyn is a star, racking up 102 tackles and two interceptions last year while earning All-MAC nods at the end of the season. Linebacker Quincy Byas was named the team’s Newcomer of the Year and logged three sacks in three starts.
All but two projected defensive starters played some time here last season.
Transfers in are light once again. EMU battles working with the FBS’ eighth-lowest operating budget, and Ypsilanti isn’t exactly a draw for those looking to enjoy greener pastures.
Zero FBS starts transfer in, but this is still the MAC’s most experienced roster, per Phil Steele, and players are returning from injury.
This should be one of the MAC’s most improved teams in 2026.
The offense more or less returns everyone who contributed to a unit that was more than serviceable, and the defense really should take a step forward. Last year, EMU went 3-7 in games in which it scored 20-plus and 1-2 in games it scored 30-plus.
Sacramento State vs Eastern Michigan Pick, Betting Analysis
Eastern Michigan fields the MAC’s most experienced roster and goes against Sacramento State, which boasts one of the least experienced rosters.
EMU returns its starting quarterback, while Sac State brings in a transfer (whether or not he played for this team in the past).
There’s scheme continuity for EMU and no continuity with Sac State.
Early in the season, that stark contrast between continuity and lack thereof matters, especially when dealing with rosters that don’t have as stark and apparent talent gaps.
EMU runs a faster-paced offense (42nd in seconds per play) and leans into its passing game due to a lack of push up front (100th in Line Yards) and dynamic play from Kim.
Although Sac State’s secondary is composed of P4 transfers, they’re lightly seasoned and don’t inspire much confidence out of the gate.
The Eagles return with a much healthier and more experienced secondary, one that should be able to match up with the Hornets’ pass-catchers and Conklin.
Expect a pass-heavy approach from both sides as Sac State tests the durability of the EMU secondary — a starkly different approach from last year’s No. 2 rushing attack in the FCS.
At home and with a massive continuity edge, I lean toward Eastern Michigan getting off to a faster start than its opponent and controlling the first half.
I also believe a full-game over 52.5 is worth a look. This total sits just above a key figure and hasn’t nudged under. But the official play here is laying the points with Eastern Michigan in the first half.
