San Diego State vs Oregon State College Football Preview
San Diego State Aztecs Betting Preview: Illusion of Progress
San Diego State made headlines this past week when its football team suffered a widespread mumps outbreak. That affected up to 36 players, many of whom missed last week’s game against Texas State.
Against all odds, San Diego State scored 31 and won the game, its most points scored against an FBS foe this year … sort of.
Dive deeper into that win, and you’ll realize just how poorly Texas State played. The Bobcats doubled up the Aztecs on yards, held them to 1-of-10 on third down and held on to the football for 40 minutes of game play.
But a 96-yard kickoff return touchdown, pick-six and 14 points scored on 17 total yards sealed the game.
Wednesday’s availability report features a number of starters questionable, but none listed as doubtful or out. Running back Lucky Sutton remains the most familiar name on the list, though his 3.3 yards per carry has been poor and he’s losing out on carries to Javion Kinnard and even Josiah Lucas.
The tight end room is exceptionally banged up, as well.
Sean Lewis’ Flash Fast offense got left behind in Ohio – this offense has been fast (23.3 seconds per play is ninth-fewest in the country) but it’s been wildly inefficient (34.9% success rate is 132nd in the country).
QB Jayden Denegal left last game early due to injury, but he’s expected to go Saturday.
This is a 1-4 team that, against all odds, shone favorably in the light of the football gods last week. It’s headed nowhere fast.
Oregon State Beavers Betting Preview: Dam Good Protection
Welcome to Braden Atkinson and Jesse Legree’s world – we’re just happy to be here.
In the young season, Legree (a freshman) has exploded for 741 yards and nine touchdowns on just 28 receptions. His 4.49 yards per route run leads all freshmen and is seventh-best in America.
On the shoulders of the two stars, Oregon State’s offense has quickly turned dangerous, keeping it in games against Houston and Texas Tech to start the year. Against its other three opponents, Oregon State is 3-0 and averaging 47 points per game.
It also helps to have a terrific offensive line, one that’s paving roads for a lightly used but decently effective run game. After taking four sacks in the season opener, Atkinson has been sacked just three times in four games (including only twice against an elite Texas Tech pass rush).
There’s a world where Oregon State’s offensive line garners Joe Moore Award considerations later in the season.
Aside from a few short bursts of points (see: Houston’s 16 points in a quarter and a half, Texas Tech’s 14 points in six minutes), the Beavers’ defense has been serviceable.
There are a couple of aspects that need to improve, namely giving up too many big runs and getting off the field more consistently on third down, but this is a defense that will win this team games.
The market is catching up to Oregon State. The Beavers only trail Boise State in the race to be the Pac-12 favorite, and rightfully so. It’s a likely matchup that plays its first edition in Week 11.

San Diego State vs Oregon State Pick, Betting Analysis
This line has moved in a couple of different ways since opening at -13.5. Early movement rocketed Oregon State up to -16.5, but that was met with early-week resistance bringing it back to -14.
Later in the week, that’s moved back up to -15.5 and -16.5, and that's more likely to continue climbing than regress. The total was bet down from as high as 57 (though it opened 51.5 for about an hour).
San Diego State’s offense hasn’t shown an ability to score — it’s scored a touchdown on just 21.7% of drives this year, 113th nationally — and its defense hasn’t shown an ability to prevent more talented offenses from scoring (and appears to be regressing).
The market is moving the right way on Oregon State, but it’s not quite there yet.
Oregon State’s team total is a well I’ve gone to a few times this year, and it’s not quite dry. We’re catching the Beavers at 34.5, a number that should have plenty of opportunities to clear thanks to Lewis’ blistering tempo on the other sideline.
A fast pace and low efficiency means more possessions for Oregon State. The Aztec defense is vulnerable up front and in its secondary.
Have another day, Atkinson.
Pick: Oregon State Team Total Over 34.5 (-113 or Better)
