Stanford vs Duke College Football Preview
I really think the Tree needed the Bye week to get healthy. I saw the posted depth chart for this game, and it shows that offensive linemen Niki Prongos and Simione Pale are back in the lineup, while wide receiver Nico Brown also returns (a Yale transfer who missed the first two games).
They were crushed by Miami, but they were really depleted.
Meanwhile, Duke is at the peak of the market. The Devils just went to Champaign and defeated Illinois outright. They looked good in their opener against Tulane.
But I fully expect Stanford to be much more consistent on the ground now that the full platoon of offensive line starters are back in the fold. That should open up the passing game to get Brown stretched vertically, and the tight ends stretched horizontally.
The offensive game plans have looked good for Stanford — I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen.
Meanwhile, there are a lot of things that Duke doesn’t do well. The Devils are poor on third downs (just 10-for-27), and the pass game is inconsistent behind Walker Eget. They’re also heavily penalized, with 19 penalties for 165 yards against them through just two games — that’s a full drive per game negated by penalties.
Ultimately, they’re too reliant on Nate Sheppard and the run game, and Stanford actually defended Miami’s run game pretty well.
Stanford vs Duke Pick, Betting Analysis
Duke has played two games since Stanford last took the field, so we’re backing the much fresher team that is getting some key pieces back on the offensive line.
Stanford is well coached this season (much more so than previous years), and I think the Tree will have a few tricks up their sleeve for this game.
I wouldn’t be stunned to see Stanford with a chance to win the game late — the Cardinal should compete well on Saturday.
