Texas A&M Aggies Betting Preview: Coming in Angry

No program is probably having a longer and tougher week than Texas A&M.

The previously ninth-ranked Aggies are now the 23rd-ranked squad in the FBS, after falling 31-21 to the Kentucky Wildcats on Kyle Field. It was so bad that the Wildcats were up 28-7 heading into the fourth quarter, and the Aggies ultimately made a push that was ultimately too late.

A lot of A&M’s struggles fall on the shoulders of quarterback Marcel Reed, who threw two interceptions and only completed 26 out of 49 passes.

There’s obviously a lot of talent for A&M’s offense, led by receivers Mario Craver, who is one of the more dynamic receivers in the game and Alabama transfer Isaiah Horton. However, the Aggies are ranked 71st in pass play Success Rate and 94th in PPA.

Their use of the run game has been incredibly basic, but it has been effective. They’ve used Rueben Owens as a solid every-down back, but his 4.1 yards per carry are mediocre at best at this level. That being said, A&M ranks 32nd in Rush Success Rate, so its use on the ground has worked.

On the defensive side of the ball, that's where the program can get in trouble. The Aggies do a fine job at stopping the run, as shown by linebackers Noah Mikhail and Ray Coney, but they have a propensity to give up explosive plays. And when you’re playing at Death Valley, that’s a recipe for disaster.

LSU Tigers Betting Preview: Looking to Avenge Coach

As rough a loss it was for Lane Kiffin’s LSU Tigers against Kiffin’s old team at Ole Miss, you have to think the Tigers are thrilled that it’s behind them.

Prior to the Ole Miss game, LSU was on fire, with one of the most dynamic offenses in college football. And a lot of it has been based on the run.

Running back Dilin Jones leads the SEC in total carries with 64, averaging 4.5 yards per carry, and has found the end zone three times. Aside from that, quarterback Sam Leavitt has been known to take off when need be, and he’s logged a rushing touchdown six times.

Now the big question is how LSU will fare after the loss of its star tight end Trey’Dez Green, who leads the Tigers in receiving yards. Green won’t miss the season, but reports coming out indicate that he won’t be able to suit up for a little bit.

Winston Watkins Jr. has proven to be a number-one target, but with Green gone, a lot of the attention is going to be pointed toward him.

Additionally, for the defense, cornerback Ja’Keem Jackson is listed as doubtful, and safety Dashawn Spears is gone for the rest of the season. Luckily, DJ Pickett and Ty Benefield will hold down the fort. But the main difference-maker on this team is probably EDGE Princewill Umanmielen, who already has an FBS-leading six sacks.

Texas A&M vs LSU Pick, Betting Analysis

Death Valley is going to be rocking tonight.

Despite that, I think this is going to be a very close matchup. A&M has a lot to play for after the disappointing loss to Kentucky, and for a team with those kinds of expectations, to go in the hole earlier on in the season will be brutal for the Aggies.

LSU’s injuries will also play a factor. Green’s absence immediately creates a hole in LSU’s passing attack, and it’ll be much easier to neutralize Watkins.

To me, this game is a toss-up. The 9.5-point spread doesn’t suggest that it will be a toss-up, but our projections suggest that this will be a much closer bout.

Pick: Texas A&M +9.5 (-108, FanDuel)
