Towson Tigers Betting Preview

Towson has struggled badly this season on defense, as the Tigers were shredded in the opener against Maine and followed that up with a performance against Navy that saw the rush defense struggle all day.

The Middies ran for 506 yards against the Tigers while registering several explosive, chunk rushing plays.

Only two of Navy’s 73 rushing attempts were stopped for a loss and the Towson defense has now seen 106 total rushing plays against it this season. I would imagine there's some fatigue along the defensive line, and South Carolina should be able to take advantage of it.

The Towson offense moved the ball effectively, as quarterback Andrew Indorf threw for 208 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The ground game never got going, as the Tigers ran for just 1.9 yards per carry without notching an explosive rush. However, four pass plays went for 25 yards or more, and the offensive line did a decent job handling the Navy defensive line.

The challenge this week will be even tougher, and the Towson offense is going to have to connect on some deep shots down the field in order to stay on the field in this one.

South Carolina Gamecocks Betting Preview

South Carolina looked great in the opener against Kent State, notching a 57-0 shutout win as the offense racked up 645 yards.

LaNorris Sellers threw beautiful passes and the receivers broke away for long, explosive plays.

Running backs Jabree Coleman and Matt Fuller ran the ball really well and situational execution was nearly perfect as South Carolina was 7-of-8 on third down and a perfect 5-of-5 scoring touchdowns in the red zone.

The Gamecocks scored on every possession outside of the first one, and the performance was impressive even considering the opponent.

The South Carolina defense was equally impressive, as the Gamecocks forced punts on eight possessions, with the other two resulting in a turnover and an “end of half” stall out.

The defense didn't have to defend any deeper than its own 40-yard line and half of Kent State’s rushing productivity came on two plays.

While the havoc numbers weren't there, the game plan was well thought out, and the Flashes couldn't stack successful plays together, which resulted in zero true scoring threats.

South Carolina is going to look to duplicate those efforts against Towson this week.

Towson vs South Carolina Pick, Betting Analysis

This line opened with South Carolina as a 45.5-point favorite with a total set at 54.5. Money has come in on Towson, moving this number down to South Carolina -43.5. The first-half number is South Carolina -24.5, and that's the direction I'm going to go with.

The Gamecocks scored on every possession last week outside of the first one, and the offense really figured out its rhythm against Kent State.

One thing we didn't see last week was the pace that offensive coordinator Kendall Briles wants to run with, and I could see a concerted effort to ramp up the tempo in the first half of this one.

Towson faced 73 rushing plays last week and surrendered 506 yards on the ground against Navy. Maine also ran the ball a ton against this front, which has to be gassed after the game last week.

I can envision the pace really being an issue for Towson, which should surrender plenty of yards and points in this game.

I was impressed with South Carolina’s situational execution on third down and in the red zone. Plenty of teams across the country failed to execute last week, but the Gamecocks were buttoned up and looked sharp.

With the offensive personnel and situational play calling we saw last week, if that's mirrored, South Carolina will score plenty of points early and often.

Towson is going to throw the ball early in this game, as it did against Navy. I don't believe the offensive line will hold up, and I don't trust the primary Towson receivers — Jarvis Jones and Aaron Enterline — to burn the South Carolina defense the way they were able to against Navy.

The offensive line will also not hold up as well, and I expect sacks and negative plays to disrupt Towson drives.

South Carolina has a bit more motivation to bury the Tigers early and get the backups some reps in the second half.

With an SEC league game on deck, I think we see a full go from the offensive side in the first half, lock down defense from the South Carolina starting platoon and an extensive lead at the half before South Carolina cruises in the second half.

I'm laying the 1H number here.

Pick: South Carolina -24.5 1H
