Utah Utes Betting Preview: Dampier Keeping Utah Afloat
Even though oddsmakers still have Devon Dampier listed as a longshot to win the Heisman, it’s tough to ignore how well he has played this season, generating over 280 yards of offense per game. Dampier’s success under center has helped keep Utah afloat after the program underwent an offseason overhaul, leading the team to a 7-0 start to the year.
When Dampier is able to scramble the defense with his dual-threat ability, the Utes can methodically move the ball down the field, ranking 11th in Success Rate. While Utah has flirted with danger regarding Havoc Allowed, keeping the ball on the ground helps negate the possibility of Dampier throwing an ill-advised pick, thereby keeping their drives alive.
Speaking of keeping the ball on the ground, Wayshawn Parker has gushed opposing front sevens this season, averaging 6.3 yards per carry. When Parker hits the ground running, Utah can apply more pressure to opposing linebackers by using Dampier in run sets, making it difficult to slow down their offense.
While Dampier has hogged the spotlight, Utah has been just as productive on defense, entering Week 9 ranked 14th in Success Rate, 14th in Finishing Drives, and 30th in Havoc. With both sides firing on all cylinders, the Utes can avoid playing in high-stakes contests, improving their chances of winning.
Cincinnati Bearcats Betting Preview: Bearcats Forced To Play Fast
Fresh off a stunning win over Texas Tech, Cincinnati has shaken up the Big 12 title picture, knocking the Red Raiders down to fourth in the conference standings. Cole Tabb ran wild in the Bearcats' win, rushing for 173 yards and one score while averaging 10.8 yards per attempt.
When Tabb gets the ground game going, Cincinnati is versatile, ranking in the top 40 in Success Rate, Explosiveness, Finishing Drives, and Havoc Allowed. Once the Bearcats get inside the 40, points have been put up on the board at a consistent rate, averaging 4.77 Points per Opportunity.
While the offense has gotten into a groove, Cincinnati’s defense has yet to give the team the production it needs to be a well-rounded unit, ranking in the bottom half of the board in Success Rate. By allowing their opponents to consistently cut the distance to gain in half on early downs, the Bearcats are unable to create Hard Stops, thereby keeping the ball out of their own hands.
Until Cincinnati is able to round back into form on defense, the Bearcats will continue to be forced to play in fast-paced track meets, bringing in too much variance to pull away on the scoreboard. While Cincinnati can mask its defense against lower-quality opponents, the Bearcats will need to be flawless in their matchup against Utah if they want to rattle off another upset.

Utah vs Cincinnati Pick, Betting Analysis
Unfortunately for Cincinnati, Utah will face minimal resistance in their efforts to march down the field, putting too much pressure on JC French IV’s shoulders to keep pace. Even with the Utes in a daunting situation, the Bearcats' lack of production on defense will help Dampier brush off regression and avoid getting off to a slow start.
Even if Utah slashes their playbook and calls a very conservative game plan, the Bearcats' front seven have been abysmal against the run, ranking outside the top-80 in Rush Success Rate, PPA, and Explosiveness. If Cincinnati decides to crowd their bodies to the middle, Dampier will be able to pick apart the gaps on the outside, keeping the offense ahead of the sticks.
On the other side of the ball, the Bearcats will be overly reliant on Explosiveness to get into scoring position, an unsustainable style of play. Even with Utah ranking near the bottom of the board in Def Explosiveness, the Utes will benefit from stretching out in the shortened field, turning Cincinnati’s scoring opportunities into field-goal attempts to help minimize the damage.
Expect Utah’s advantages on offense to help them get off to a hot start, making the Utes worth a wager to cover the spread at no higher than the key number of -7. If Utah gets out to a sizable lead and Morgan Scalley sends in the second team early in the fourth quarter, protect your initial wager by arbing Cincinnati at loftier odds to lock in a profit.
Pick: Utah -6.5
