UTEP vs Michigan College Football Preview
UTEP Miners Betting Preview
After being held off the scoreboard in their season opener against Oklahoma, UTEP took its frustrations out on Texas Southern, routing the Tigers 51-10. EJ Colson Jr. faced minimal resistance in his efforts to air out the ball in their win, throwing for 239 yards and four touchdowns while completing 66.66% of his passes.
Even when matched up against a far lower-quality opponent, the Miners still struggled to stay ahead of the sticks, ranking 135th in Off Success Rate and 97th in Finishing Drives. Their inability to take care of the ball makes them vulnerable to stalling out in the middle of their drives, grading out nearly equally as poor in Havoc Allowed.
Their top-five mark in Explosiveness is also fraudulent, coming at the expense of an FCS opponent, which makes it look more polished than it really is.
When matched up against the Sooners, UTEP’s offensive line struggled to hold their ground, forcing Colson to combat against a high amount of Havoc, drastically lowering the quality of his throws. With Michigan on deck, expect the Miners to fall hard back down to reality, leading to a high rate of early outs.
On the other side of the ball, the Miners have fared much better on defense, ranking above league average in Def Success Rate, Havoc, and Explosiveness.
Granted, we need to temper our expectations given their small sample size against an FCS opponent, which indicates negative regression is looming large. Especially when digging into their box score against Oklahoma, giving up over 400 yards to their anemic offense.
Michigan Wolverines Betting Preview
Just when everyone wrote him off, Bryce Underwood did not write back.
While I'm still not entirely sure what that means, it was encouraging to see the Wolverines upset the Sooners after their debacle against Western Michigan, avoiding a devastating loss to keep their hopes of making the playoffs alive before their schedule ramps up later on in the year.
Even though his performance did lead Michigan to a pivotal win, Underwood still severely underwhelmed through the air, throwing for just 111 yards while barely converting more than 50% of his passes. The Wolverines dual threat quarterback was able to make up for it on the ground, gashing the Sooners front seven for 87 yards while punching one in for six with his legs.
With that said, the Wolverines' ceiling will continue to be lowered until Underwood can find success through the air, ranking in the bottom half of the board in Pass Success Rate, PPA, and Explosiveness.
When matched up against a defense that can neutralize his legs, the Wolverines offense will grind to a halt, keeping them out of scoring position.
Fortunately for Michigan, their defense will be able to continue to keep them competitive in their contests until their offense can figure out their identity, fielding a group who ranks in the top-60 in Def Success Rate and in EPA per play.
By excelling on defense, the Wolverines are able to avoid playing in highly volatile track meets, making it easier for their offense to match their opponents' output.

UTEP vs Michigan Pick, Betting Analysis
While their win against the Sooners was certainly impressive, Underwood’s lack of consistency will continue to be a thorn in their side, holding their offense back from being a well-rounded unit.
By struggling to air out the ball, opposing defenses can spy their linebackers at a higher rate and crash down on the edges when he tries to take off and run, keeping their offense comfortably behind the sticks.
Even a matchup against UTEP may give Underwood problems, facing off against a secondary that ranks 39th in Def Pass Success Rate and 11th in PPA while leading the nation in Explosiveness. If the Wolverines' pass catchers struggle to create separation, Underwood will be forced to throw into tight windows, leading to a higher volume of Turnover Worthy Plays.
Speaking of Turnover Worthy Plays, Colson will be under a relentless amount of pressure with his undersized offensive line struggling to stand their ground against the Wolverines. With less time to go through his progressions, his passing lanes will be smothered, forcing his pass catchers to fight off contact while trying to haul in a reception.
With both offenses struggling to move the ball down the field, expect a decline in their total number of scoring opportunities, shading value towards the under on the full game total.
When a market opens up for Underwood’s longest completion prop, bet the under at no lower than 32.5 to help diversify your risk.
Pick: Under 49.5
