Wyoming Cowboys Betting Preview: Solid Defense

Wyoming needed a big win last week against Hawaii to save its season and keep a bowl game within reach, and the Pokes were able to get it with a 27-10 victory.

The offense had its best output of the season, racking up 387 yards on 6.4 yards per play, while a smothering defense made it difficult for Hawaii to get into an offensive rhythm of its own.

Wyoming’s defense was consistently able to frustrate Hawaii while limiting explosive plays and forcing the Bows to work methodically in the second half, where each team had just four possessions.

The game changed after Hawaii took the second-half kickoff all the way down to the Wyoming one-yard line with a drive that had 16 plays.

A failed fourth-and-goal attempt gave the Cowboys the ball back, and they went 99 yards and scored to extend the lead to 20-3.

This week's opponent is much tougher, and Wyoming will need perfect execution to go into the Fargo Dome and hang with North Dakota State.

Wyoming has shown very little zest with the offense up to this point, and the pace has been very slow. In the offseason, the Pokes talked about a more dynamic approach to the offense with new OC Christian Taylor coming in from the NFL to work with transfer quarterback Tyler Hughes.

The offense hasn't changed in schematics or tempo, as the Pokes are still run-oriented with heavy functional use of the tight ends.

Tote Harris and Markell Holman are splitting carries at running back, and while not overly explosive, these two have been effective, combining for 445 yards on the ground this season.

The pass-receiving game features a high target share to the tight ends, as Kyle Frendt and Jake Wilson are the team’s leading pass receivers, combining for 19 receptions and 299 yards.

Wyoming will have excellent play calls dialed up on third down to sustain drives and find the red zone, since explosive plays are unlikely against North Dakota State.

The defense has been solid for Wyoming, limiting explosive plays and stepping up in the red zone.

The defensive line hasn't had the impact the Pokes would've hoped for at this point in the season, and Wyoming was pushed around on the road by both Colorado State and Central Michigan earlier this year.

North Dakota State profiles similarly offensively to what Wyoming runs, so there's reason to believe this defense will be prepared for what it'll see.

However, Cowboys have to stop the run in early downs, which will force North Dakota State into situations where it'll have to throw the ball to convert third down.

North Dakota State Bison Betting Preview: Run-Heavy Offense

North Dakota State has been very impressive in its inaugural season at the FBS level. Head coach Tim Polasek has preached toughness, attitude and grit; the embodiment of what the North Dakota State program has been built upon.

The balanced offense hasn't been as dominant on the ground, and the quarterback play is slightly less effective than in prior seasons, but the Bison are winning and have found themselves squarely in the mix to win the Mountain West Conference in 2026.

The Bison are also a run-heavy team, and we should see run action in early downs, with DJ Scott and Myles Mitchell leading the charge. These two have split the running back duties and have combined to run for 439 yards, with each player having three rushing touchdowns.

Quarterback Nathan Hayes has been very efficient while completing 67% of his passes with seven touchdown throws, and the offensive line has done well to limit the negative plays and sacks.

This offense is down a notch compared to the FCS offenses that were bullying teams weekly, but the identity is there for the Bison to continue finding the end zone.

The defense has been solid this season, completely shutting down three of its four opponents. North Dakota State is allowing just 12.3 points and 254 yards per game, and the explosive plays against this defense have been kept to a minimum.

The secondary has been strong, although Sacramento State was able to throw the ball in the second half against the Bison backups after the outcome was already decided.

In its two home games this season, North Dakota State has allowed a total of 305 yards and just three yards per play, and this defense is expected to have another strong showing on Saturday.

Wyoming vs North Dakota State Pick, Betting Analysis

This line opened with North Dakota State listed as a favorite by 19.5 points, with a total set at 45.5. Wyoming has taken a little money in the market and currently is listed as a 17.5-point underdog. I like the under in this matchup.

Both teams will run a slow tempo, and we'll see a heavy-run approach from both offenses. Wyoming is running 58 plays per game on average and, even when trailing by multiple scores, doesn't speed up the tempo.

The Pokes will run the rock, and I think Wyoming will have some success on the ground against the North Dakota State defense. The chunk plays won't be there, but Wyoming is comfortable moving the ball four yards at a time, and we should see this play out with long, methodical drives today.

Wyoming hasn't converted well in the red zone, having scored just five touchdowns in 11 trips against FBS competition this season. North Dakota State has been outstanding defensively, keeping opponents out of the end zone outside of the fourth quarter in its game against Air Force.

For the rest of the season, this defense has allowed just one red-zone touchdown. I expect Wyoming to have to settle for field goal attempts, which it should take in a lower-scoring defensive game.

North Dakota State will also run the ball extensively in this matchup, but the ground attack and offensive line play haven't been as dominant this season as in prior seasons.

The Bison's scoring drives haven't been quick, and Wyoming has been excellent defensively at preventing explosive plays, ranking 23rd nationally.

I do think North Dakota State will score some points in this matchup, but the possessions are going to be lengthy and will require 10-12 plays.

North Dakota State has also struggled in the red zone offensively, and its situational execution has been down from prior seasons. Against FBS competition, North Dakota State has just seven red zone trips in three games with four touchdown scores.

The Wyoming defense has only allowed two red zone touchdowns combined over the last three weeks, and North Dakota State has a field goal operation that it trusts.

Don’t be surprised if North Dakota State has to kick a couple of red zone field goals when it moves the ball down inside the Wyoming 20-yard line.

Both defenses will be familiar with the opposing offense. The pace is going to be slow on both sides, and possessions are going to be limited. Any level of offensive success should be met with defensive resistance in the red zone, and both of these offenses will struggle to register explosive, chunk plays.

This should be a slow-burning grind, with a quick-moving clock.

Take the under.

Pick: Under 45.5
