Buffalo vs. Miami (OH) Prediction and Pick
Buffalo wins by running the ball, and it has to. Burch went for 172 yards in the overtime win over UMass and 184 yards with three touchdowns against Bowling Green, including the 73-yarder that put that game away. The Bulls average about 176 rushing yards a game. The passing game is a different story. Jason Wright went 16-for-35 for 134 yards against UMass and threw for 127 against Bowling Green. Buffalo scores 22.6 points a game, which ranks outside the top 100 nationally.
That puts a lot of pressure on one player. If Miami crowds the box and forces Wright into third-and-7, Buffalo doesn't have a passing game that can bail it out. The Bulls are also 1-2 away from home this season, and their two road losses came at FIU (33-20) and Penn State (55-13). The road win at Toledo (23-8) is the best thing on the résumé, but the 21-17 win over Albany and the 31-28 escape against Robert Morris don't say much.
Miami has the more balanced offense. Caleb Heavner can hurt you with his legs, and he ran for a touchdown in both the UMass and Central Michigan games. In the 28-27 win at Central Michigan, he added 221 passing yards, and Maleek Huggins caught seven balls for 122. The RedHawks score 27 points a game and are 3-1 at home. Their three losses came at Pitt, at Cincinnati by four and against Bowling Green by four.
The case against laying the points is that Miami's last two road wins came by one point each. But those were on the road, and this one is in Oxford. Miami also beat Buffalo 37-20 last November.
A Miami moneyline at around -245 is too expensive to bother with. The spread is the better bet. Miami has to win by a touchdown, and Buffalo has to throw well enough to keep up if it falls behind. We don't think Wright can do that.
Pick: Miami (OH) -6.5 (around -115). We'd play it up to -7. If you see -7.5, it might be worth waiting to see if Buffalo money pulls the line back down before kickoff.
