Ohio vs. Akron Prediction
Ohio's defense is the biggest reason to back the Bobcats, but the matchup also sets up well for them on the other side of the ball.
The Bobcats allow roughly 12 points per game in MAC play and about 278 total yards per game. Linebacker Michael Molnar is coming off an 18-tackle performance against Eastern Michigan that included four tackles for loss, while Jack Fries added 10 tackles and two sacks.
That unit should have opportunities against an Akron offense that has struggled with turnovers. Brayden Roggow has thrown 10 interceptions against seven touchdowns, and the Zips rank near the bottom of the country in turnover margin.
Akron can still move the ball. The Zips outgained Kent State 422-376 in their last game, with Jordan Gant rushing for 162 yards and two touchdowns and Roggow throwing for 275. The problem has been turning that production into consistent points, with Akron averaging only around 19 per game while allowing more than 32.
Ohio's offense has been much steadier. Nick Poulos has yet to throw an interception this season and passed for 266 yards against Eastern Michigan while adding a rushing touchdown.
The Bobcats' ground game struggled in that win, finishing with only 78 yards, but this is a much better matchup. Ohio averages around 190 rushing yards per game, while Akron allows roughly 185, so Duncan Brune and Victor Rosa should have room to get the offense back on schedule.
There is some risk in laying double digits on the road. Ohio is only 2-2 away from Athens and has covered four of eight games this season.
Still, the matchup favors the Bobcats. They own the clear defensive edge, protect the football better and have won seven straight meetings against Akron.
