Jaguars vs Raiders Preview, Prediction
With both of these teams coming off their bye week, you'd assume they can cook up some things offensively. But usually when you see these unders when both of the teams are coming off a bye, teams are 22-5-1 (82% win percentage) to the under since 2021.
On the personnel side, Brian Thomas Jr. has had a very disappointing season so far for the Jaguars, and now this past week, he's been practicing with a harness. His name has been floating around in trade rumors, but something's off with him.
Star rookie Travis Hunter will be out for this game after suffering a knee injury in practice. He was placed on injured reserve and will be sidelined at least four weeks. The injury comes at an inopportune time — Hunter's role in Jacksonville's offense had been increasing since Week 5 in terms of snap count and route percentage.
This team is really just Trevor Lawrence, who is now back at 6.3 passing yards per attempt.
Just when we were going to give head coach Liam Coen all this credit, their offense suddenly starts to trend down.
Moving on to the Raiders, their offense appears to be trending up.
It looks like Brock Bowers is going to be back for this game, but will it matter given how bad Geno Smith has been this season?
Pete Carroll and Chip Kelly are playing like it's 1974. They're risk averse for some reason, opting for field goals on these long drives instead of going for it.
Who knows who the Raiders have available here from a personnel standpoint.
Jakobi Meyers could be traded, or he could sit out with his knee injury. Putting in Jack Bech for Dont’e Thornton Jr. takes away a deep threat and leaves the Raiders with just Tre Tucker. And that's probably because they don't want Smith throwing deep; Carroll basically said as much. They don't want him turning it over.
Even if the Raiders get some better turnover luck here, we will probably see some long drives.
Both of these defenses are above average. The Jaguars are 11th in defensive DVOA and the Raiders are 13th.
Jaguars vs Raiders Predictions, Betting Analysis
The Raiders are going to try to run the ball regardless of who's healthy and who's not, and that generally doesn't work against the Jaguars.
Both of these teams are pretty solid in explosiveness, and the Jags have shown some weakness in the passing game, but I don't think the Raiders can exploit that with the lineup they're trotting out there.
Totals have been trending over so far this year. Overs are somewhere around 10 games over .500 entering this week.
However, once you get above 44.5, which is near the median over the last few years in terms of scoring, that's when you start seeing the unders hit at a better rate.
Pick: Under 44.5 (-110)
