Polymarket is pricing a U.S.-China tariff agreement by December 31 at 91%. Most of the attention is on this week. Xi Jinping arrives in Washington on Wednesday and meets President Trump at the White House on Thursday, with trade expected to be one of the main issues.

But the more interesting number may be what Polymarket is pricing after Thursday.

The September 30 contract sits at 77%, while December is at 91%. If September misses, those prices imply roughly a 61% chance that a qualifying tariff deal still gets announced before year-end.

That is the number I have a harder time buying.

US-China Tariff Agreement Odds

This is the second Trump-Xi summit of the year.

Their May meeting produced purchase commitments, new trade groups and a framework for continued negotiations. But it did not produce the type of tariff agreement this Polymarket market requires.

Now the two sides appear closer to something concrete.

Recent reporting points to possible reciprocal tariff reductions covering roughly $30 billion of trade on each side, including agriculture, energy and other goods. Another possible outcome is simply extending the current trade truce, which expires November 10.

That gives Thursday a real path to Yes, but there is still a big difference between keeping the truce alive and announcing an actual tariff agreement.

What actually counts

Polymarket requires a publicly announced mutual agreement involving tariffs.

That makes the summit outcome fairly simple to think about.

Reciprocal tariff cuts with specific products or rates: clear Yes.

Another trade-truce extension: potentially enough, but it depends on whether the agreement actually changes or extends tariff treatment.

Purchases, new talks and positive diplomatic language: not enough on their own.

That last outcome is basically what happened in May.

What the price is saying

The interesting part is what happens if Thursday misses.

If nothing qualifies by September 30, Polymarket still implies about a 61% chance of a deal before December 31.

If nothing qualifies by October 31, it still implies roughly a 47% chance in November or December alone.

That feels aggressive.

If the summit ends without tariff cuts, it likely means the two sides still were not ready to finish the deal despite months of negotiations.

November 10 gives them another deadline when the current truce expires, but another extension could still fall short of the clean tariff agreement this market is looking for.

I would put the post-September conditional closer to 35% to 45%.

At 40%, the December contract would be worth closer to 86 cents instead of 91.

The trade

October 31 Yes at 83 cents is my favorite position on the board.

Thursday is clearly the biggest opportunity for a deal, but an agreement does not necessarily have to be finalized during the summit itself. The two sides could leave Washington with the framework in place and announce the actual tariff details in the days or weeks afterward.

October gives you that extra time without paying 91 cents for the full year-end window.

If Thursday produces specific reciprocal tariff cuts, October Yes wins. If the summit ends positively but negotiators need another few weeks to finish the details, October still gives you room.
