Reigning MLS Cup champion Seattle battles red-hot Portland on Sunday in the latest Major League Soccer showdown between these Cascadia rivals.
Portland enters the match fresh off a stellar showing at the MLS is Back tournament, where it captured the championship with a 2-1 victory against Orlando City in the finale.
The Timbers, led by Diego Valeri, Jeremy Obobisse, and Sebastian Blanco, were the class of the competition and hope to continue that in-form trend in their first match back after returning from Florida to resume the league’s regular season.
On the other side, things did not go as smoothly — or as planned — for Seattle in Orlando. The Sounders went 1-1-1 in group play before suffering an embarrassing 4-1 loss against Los Angeles Football Club in the Round of 16 of the knockout stage.
Digging into the data and statistics, it was interesting to see Seattle — not Portland — has some of the best numbers in the entire league. The Sounders own an impressive 6.5 expected goals against 1.8 expected goals against for a whopping +4.7xGDiff, which is tops in the Western Conference. Seattle’s xGDiff for 90 minutes of +2.38 is also No. 1 in the entire league.
In contrast, Portland has some surprisingly subpar statistics in the same categories (2.0 xGF/-2.2 xGA = -0.2 xGDiff and -0.06 xGDiff/90) and should improve them as the season progresses.
With those numbers in mind and looking back at the track record between these sides, everything points toward an offensive-minded affair. That said, I am backing the total to go over the number and both teams to score goals.
The last three games between Seattle and Portland have ended in 2-1 results, and it would not surprise me if we saw a similar final score this time around. Neither likes to keep a clean sheet when facing each other, with the Timbers and Sounders each scoring at least one goal in nine of the last 11 meetings.
Add in the fact Portland has just one shutout in nine matches this season across all competitions, and you have to like your chances in seeing both of these plays hit.
The Bets: Total Over 2.5 Goals (minus-148); Both Teams To Score – Yes (minus-195)
