This is a brutal matchup for Quintana, especially given how heavily he leans on his sinker (45% usage) — not just his primary pitch, but also his main put-away offering. The Padres have the 2nd-lowest whiff rate against sinkers, so they should be able to make early contact and battle in two-strike counts if it gets there. The confirmed lineup got a bit tougher with Jose Iglesias included, and I’m now projecting this closer to -130. Quintana’s two best K chances are the 5 and 9 hitters, but I have him getting pulled right around the 5-hitter (Sheers) the third time through — meaning it’s basically a coin flip he sees Sheers again and a long shot he faces Lockridge a third time, which really caps his K ceiling here.
