Tony Sartori’s Cubs vs Braves Preview
Chicago’s Cade Horton looks to pull away in the National League Rookie of the Year race. The No. 7 overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, Horton has burst onto the scene and is emerging as one of the premier pitchers in the league.
Through 20 appearances on the mound in his debut campaign, Horton is 9-4 with a 2.78 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. The Oklahoma alum has been particularly dominant recently, allowing one or fewer runs in eight of his past nine starts.
Horton is 6-1 with a 0.77 ERA and a 0.81 WHIP over that stretch. The most recent of those outings came against Atlanta, a game in which Horton tossed five no-hit innings.
Following the rookie hurler is a competent bullpen. This season, the Cubs’ relief corps ranks in the top half of the league in ERA, fielding independent pitching (FIP), and expected FIP (xFIP).
Chicago’s pitching staff should also receive plenty of run support, as Atlanta hands the ball to right-hander Spencer Strider. Putting together a forgettable campaign, Strider is 5-12 with a 4.97 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP through 19 starts.
His underlying metrics are equally poor. Entering this matchup, Strider ranks in the bottom third of the league in expected ERA (xERA), expected batting average (xBA), barrel rate, and hard-hit rate.
Like Horton, Strider’s most recent start came against tonight’s opponent. In that outing, the right-hander allowed three runs on five hits en route to a 7-6 loss.
Not only do the Cubs possess the starting-pitching edge, they also boast the bullpen advantage. This season, Chicago’s relief corps outranks Atlanta’s in ERA, FIP, and xFIP.
Cubs vs Braves Prediction, Betting Analysis
Among the many advantages the Cubs own in this matchup, perhaps none is wider than the hitting. Chicago ranks in the top eight in runs scored per game, slugging percentage, OPS, and home runs.
Meanwhile, the Braves rank 15th or lower in each of those four key categories. The only advantage Atlanta possesses is home field, but that isn’t enough to offset the other aforementioned variables.
Pick: Cubs moneyline (-102 | Play to -110)
