Detroit Tigers Betting Preview: Tigers Lean on Skubal to Stay Hot in Playoffs

In theory, the Tigers should have the easy job here with Tarik Skubal on the bump. You'd figure just a few runs do the trick — the only issue is that offense is scarce in the postseason.

Detroit is hitting just .218 this postseason, sure, but it's held a strong 0.35 strikeout-to-walk ratio which is a cut above Seattle's. By walking in 9.2% of their plate appearances, the Tigers have desperately tried to support themselves with a steady flow of baserunners, and they do run the bases well on top of that. They'll hope a good matchup versus two fly-ball pitchers bears fruit.

It's hard to say too much about Skubal, who has allowed just eight hits and four walks in 14 2/3 innings with 23 strikeouts. He did have somewhat of a tough time with Seattle this season, allowing a home run in each of the two starts he made, but he didn't seem to have any issues in Game 2 when he punched out nine over seven innings of two-run ball. Aside from two Jorge Polanco solo homers, the lefty allowed just four runners.

Seattle Mariners Betting Preview: Kirby, Castillo Aim to Keep Mariners Alive at Home

The Mariners' plan of attack here will likely feature both George Kirby and Luis Castillo, though the former has been announced as the starter.

Kirby hasn't been my favorite arm all year, coming in with plenty of flaws around his strikeout upside, but his start in Game 1 was hard to deny. He struck out eight over five innings of two-run ball, and that was more than we could say for the youngster during the regular season.

Detroit roughed him up for four runs on five hits, a homer and three walks over five innings, and while this game will be played in Seattle there's a great chance it could do that again. The Tigers have walked a bunch this postseason, and while Kirby's been excellent in limiting the walks overall he's certainly seen some issues creep in over the last three months.

This is a man who owns a friendly-enough 3.38 ERA at home with an ERA north of five runs on the road, so he'll be hoping to lean on his home park as much as he can while his team looks to find offense in spite of it. The Mariners are hitting just .219 with some poor marks in plate discipline, and while they did hit for more power down the stretch neither team has showcased much.

Tigers vs Mariners Prediction, Betting Analysis

It's hard not to love Skubal and this Tigers offense, which features much more consistency than their opponents. In hitting for more contact over the course of the season and walking more than the Mariners, they should be able to find a rhythm and tire Kirby out. If they do that, they'll be able to dig into Castillo, a fly-baller, just like they did in Game 2.

Detroit is 12th in OPS to fly-ball arms, and while Kirby doesn't serve up as many as his teammates his bullpen ran the third-lowest ground-ball rate in baseball this season.

I'm banking on at least three to four innings of Castillo and friends, and with Detroit's talent on offense I think it's enough to get it a few runs. With Skubal on the hill against a similarly cold offense, you've got to favor the road team.

Pick: Tigers ML (-120, bet365; play to -138)
