Alex Hinton’s Angels vs Astros Preview
The Angels have been teetering on the periphery of the AL Wild Card race for the last couple of months. They have fallen of late, having lost seven of their last 10 games. Despite that, there are still several positives that have emerged from this season.
With a win tonight, the Angels will match their win total from last night. Zach Neto has quietly emerged as a star. He is slashing .270/.326/.491 with 23 home runs, 58 runs batted in, and 24 stolen bases. He is tied for fifth in the American League with 5.2 WAR.
Jo Adell has already passed his career-high and is tied for the team lead with Taylor Ward with 30 home runs on the season. Even franchise legend Mike Trout has been relatively healthy. He has played over 100 games for just the second time in the last six years and has 20 home runs on the year.
The Angels usually have enough offense to hang around as they rank fourth in home runs and 17th in runs scored. However, it has been their pitching that has let them down. They rank 28th in the MLB with a 4.81 team ERA this season, which took a hit on Wednesday after they allowed 20 runs against the Rangers.
Anderson will get the ball today, and he has a 4.89 xERA over 131 and 1/3 innings. He has done a good job limiting hard contact. However, he has also issued 54 walks with two or more in seven of his last nine starts. If he does issue a walk tonight, it would be in his best interest to issue a free pass to Yordan Alvarez.
The Astros have won eight of the last nine AL West division titles. They are currently on track to do so with a two-game lead over the Mariners. Perhaps even more important was the return of Yordan Alvarez.
The Astros have been lacking a left-handed presence in their lineup, which they tried to address at the trade deadline with the acquisition of Jesus Sanchez. However, few hitters can impact the game like Alvarez, who entered the year with 30 home runs in each of the last four seasons.
He hit his first home run since returning from the IL on Wednesday. He enters tonight's game 8-for-21 (.381) with three doubles, three home runs, and six RBI against Anderson.
As a group, the Astros are hitting .292 against Anderson. Jose Altuve is hitting .229 in August, but he is 9-for-28 with a double and a home run against Anderson. Carlos Correa recently had a 10-game hitting streak come to an end, but he is hitting .319 in August.
With Cristian Javier getting the start, manager Joe Espada may need several innings from his bullpen tonight. The Astros have won two of his three starts thus far, but he has pitched just 10 innings as he recovered from injury.
Angels vs Astros Prediction, Betting Analysis
When the Angels are involved, you can usually expect a ton of runs, whether they are launching home runs or giving them up. Three of their last five games have had 10 runs or more. Additionally, Anderson has a 5.84 ERA in 61 and 2/3 innings against the Astros.
The over has hit in Javier’s first three starts.
And head-to-head, the over has hit seven in the last 10 meetings, averaging 11.3 runs per game. The Astros have also won seven of those meetings.
However, the price is better on the over, and that is what I am targeting tonight.
Pick: Over 8.5 (-125)
