Alex Hinton’s Twins vs Athletics Betting Preview

Minnesota Twins Betting Preview, Analysis

May was an excellent month for the Twins after a rough start to the season. They went 18-8, including a 13-game winning streak.

They averaged 4.3 runs per game in May and got a boost over the weekend with the return of Byron Buxton, who missed some time after a collision with Carlos Correa. Buxton has two hits in each of his past two games.

Trevor Larnach has provided a boost from the top of the lineup. He has been hitting .321 over the last week and has had exactly four home runs and 14 RBIs in April and May. Ty France is hitting .350 over the last week as well.

The team could also benefit from Royce Lewis.  The 25-year-old missed the start of the season with a hamstring injury. He enters play today with a .127 average in 71 at-bats. He has just homered once thus far after 31 in his past 140 games.

Their pitching has fueled their turnaround. The Twins rank sixth in the MLB with a 3.32 team ERA.

Four starters have a sub-3.60 ERA, including Joe Ryan (2.57 ERA, 3.17 xERA), who will get the start tonight and look to snap a two-game skid.

Ryan ranks in the 87th percentile of qualified pitchers in xBA, strikeout rate and walk rate. He has allowed one run or fewer in five of his past six starts, but will have to navigate a tough Athletics lineup today.

Athletics Betting Preview, Analysis

The Athletics were a great story to begin the year as just a few weeks ago, they were two games above .500. Since then, they have lost 19 of 22.

They enter tonight's game on a six-game losing streak after being swept in Toronto over the weekend.

The Athletics still rank fifth in MLB in batting average and sixth in OPS. Lawrence Butler, Jacob Wilson and Brent Rooker are all hitting .350 or better over the last week.

Wilson has been a revelation, hitting .357 with seven home runs, 32 RBI and a .900 OPS this season. He is also a heavy favorite to win AL Rookie of the Year.

However, the Athletics' pitching staff has let them down. Their 5.71 team ERA ranks last in the MLB. They allowed 39 runs in Toronto. Free agent acquisition Luis Severino will look to play the stopper role tonight.

Severino is coming off a solid outing in Houston, tossing six innings and allowing just two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out four.

He had to settle for a no-decision, but was able to lower his ERA to 3.89 for the season.

Twins vs Athletics Prediction, Betting Analysis

Of the 19 losses during their recent struggles, the Athletics have lost 14 by two runs or more. That includes three of Severino's last four starts.

Despite a solid year individually, Luis Severino is just 1-4 on the year, and the team is 4-8 in his starts. Collectively, the Twins' projected lineup tonight has a .804 OPS against him.

I expect the Twins to push across a few runs off Severino and even more against the Athletics bullpen.

They will have the edge on the mound with Ryan getting the ball. If he continues his recent outings and holds the Athletics under three runs, I expect him to get enough run support for the Twins to win this game by two runs or more.

As a result, I will be backing them on the run line tonight.

Pick: Twins -1.5 (+105, BetMGM)
