Minnesota Twins Betting Preview: Matthews Throwing Better Than Numbers Indicate

The Twins are very much off and running in this series, scoring 20 runs across their first two wins and supporting some very strong efforts from their pitching staff. Now, they'll hand the ball to exciting rookie Zebby Matthews as they look to climb just a bit closer toward the Detroit Tigers in first.

Matthews has been hard to hit lately, even if the numbers don't look all that great on the surface. He was victimized by two home runs last time out against the Seattle Mariners, but has only yielded 16 hits through 14 innings with 21 punchouts to five walks.

The righty's Expected Batting Average is a very acceptable .248 for the tough results he's seen, and while he's had some issues with suppressing power, that's bound to happen for a guy who has predominantly pitched to contact in the air.

The conditions in the Athletics' home park may not be all that appealing to Matthews, but the good news is that they're striking out at an incredibly high 26.6% clip over the past two weeks. Matthews has proven already that he can generate punchouts in a hurry, and he really hasn't given up consistent-enough damage to be a giant concern.

Athletics Betting Preview: Can Springs Suppress Minnesota's Power?

Jeffrey Springs is expected to get the ball for the Athletics, though without an official announcement it's certainly possible that they choose to dip into their never-ending bag of long relievers to get an inning or two before he enters.

That might be a good idea, because the lefty has really struggled in 2025 after teasing us with his potential for years. His strikeout rate is way down to 18.3% after reaching great heights with the Tampa Bay Rays, and he's now walked 10.8% of the batters he's faced. The latter isn't the biggest issue in the world, especially with his six walks last time out against Toronto weighing that number down, but for a fly ball pitcher who owns a .420 Expected Slugging, the power is very much a concern.

Springs has now allowed four home runs in his last three outings, and 10 in 12 total starts this season. Minnesota may have fallen into a bit of a rut prior to this series, but after hitting three homers on Tuesday and continuing to rack up hits, this staff is very much in danger once again.

Twins vs Athletics Prediction, Betting Analysis

With two fly ball pitchers doing battle, it's no surprise that I'm going to have to look into the contact splits. The Athletics have ranked three spots lower in OPS to fly-ball pitchers than the latter, while the Twins are a firm seven spots better against fly-ball arms. In fact, the Twins have the 11th-best batting average against these types and rank 25th against ground-ballers with a .226 average.

That gives me all the confidence I need here that Minnesota can keep on hitting against either Springs or this collection of middling relief arms. On the flip side, the Athletics' struggles with strikeouts and fly-ball pitchers should help Matthews finally settle in and have a solid outing.

Pick: Twins -1.5 (-120)
