Charlie Wright’s Phillies vs Rockies Preview
Rockies starting pitcher German Marquez has been among the weakest strikeout pitchers in MLB this season.
Among pitchers with at least 40 frames thrown, his 10.9% strikeout rate ranks only ahead of teammate Antonio Senzatlea. Marquez also has the 10th-lowest swinging-strike rate and the lowest CSW rate.
Marquez has posted an absurd 8% strikeout rate in three home starts.
Among MLB lineups over the past month, the Phillies boast the fourth-lowest strikeout rate against right-handed pitchers at 18.8%. Thursday’s projected lineup has a 19.1% strikeout rate against the side this year.
The Phillies should have at least five lefties in the lineup, including three in the top four. Marquez has just an 8.2% strikeout rate against southpaws.
Colorado got decent length from Senzatela (6 IP) and Kyle Freeland (5 ⅓ IP) in this series. Carson Palmquist only went 4 ⅓ on Wednesday, but Angel Chivilli covered 2 ⅓ in relief. Regardless, the bullpen should be well-rested enough to provide a short leash for Marquez.
I bet Marquez Under 3.5 strikeouts earlier, but that line has since moved. Still, I’m happy to put a half-unit on Under 2.5 at any solid plus-money price.
Pick: German Marquez Under 2.5 Strikeouts (+130, BetMGM)
