Collin Whitchurch’s Pirates vs Cardinals Preview
People should be talking more about Cardinals starting pitcher Matthew Liberatore.
The young lefty is the epitome of a post-hype prospect. He came to St. Louis in the Randy Arozarena trade and was underwhelming in his first few Major League stints.
But I’m buying into what he’s been showing us this season.
Liberatore has a 3.44 ERA in 34 innings across six starts, and everything under the hood seems legit.
I particularly like that he’s not a pitcher who will beat himself in this matchup, especially against an offense like Pittsburgh’s.
He doesn’t walk hitters. He only has three this season. He’s not going to sport a walk rate of 3% all season, but his ability to avoid the free passes isn’t a fluke.
It’s never fun to bet against Pirates starting pitcher Paul Skenes. Still, the NL Cy Young favorite is playing for a bad baseball team. The Pirates are just 3-4 in his starts this year. He must be near-perfect in every outing to keep his team in the game.
Against a pitcher of Liberatore’s quality, the margins are razor thin.
I split a unit on the Cardinals in both halves for Tuesday’s game.
