Kyle Hendricks is off to the worst start in his nine-year Cubs tenure. The typically-reliable righty is pitching to a 5.20 ERA while failing to finish six innings in eight of his 10 starts.
Hendricks has never had an overpowering pitch arsenal; instead, he relies on control and finesse to initiate soft contact. This season, the issue is that his control has not been there. The Professor’s 61.7% strike rate is the lowest of his career and ranks 109th out of 124 qualifying starting pitchers. Hendricks' 7.8% walk rate is also a career-high.
Plus, Hendricks has not been limiting the hard contact as he normally does. His hard-hit percentage (39.5%) is by far the highest of his career (previous high was 33%).
Tonight, the division-rival Brewers will face Hendricks for the third time this season. I like the Brew Crew to replicate the success it has had so far — torching Hendricks for 12 hits and seven runs in 9.2 innings. Moreover, Hendricks’ control should come into play, because Milwaukee boasts the third-lowest chase rate in baseball.
I don’t have Hendricks making it past the fifth inning tonight.
