Rangers vs Tigers Projected Starting Pitchers
Rangers vs Tigers MLB Betting Preview
It's a dreadful matchup for the Rangers against Tarik Skubal, especially given that Corey Seager is on the IL. Seager's batted ball profile against Skubal is strong, so not having him available hurts the Texas offense.
The Rangers have been batting .209 against Skubal in the past, with a 30% strikeout rate. This offense has been struggling lately, and the injuries are starting to pile up.
Jake Burger has been demoted to Triple-A, and they are without Josh Jung and Seager. Marcus Semien has also struggled to heat up, so predicting what offensive effort we'll see from this group is tough.
Not only is it a difficult offensive matchup, but Patrick Corbin toeing the rubber will not make things easier. Corbin has decent numbers in 2025 thus far, and I was shocked to see some of his metrics.
Corbin is certainly overperforming, as his 3.69 ERA should be closer to 4.69. But many of the batted ball metrics against him are promising, including an elite barrel rate and hard contact against mark.
Opposing hitters aren't missing the ball much, but they are making weak contact, which is encouraging to say the least. This could cause the Tigers offense to be contained more than one would think.
Corbin has held opposing hitters to a 32% hard-hit rate and an average exit velocity of 88 MPH. He has also reduced his walk rate and isn't allowing many free passes.
I have a lot of doubt about the Rangers' ability to perform tonight against Skubal, but Corbin might be able to skate by without getting touched up too much.
The Tigers offense is humming, and they put on a show offensively this past week in Colorado. Without factoring in the current state of the Rockies' ball club, it's time to start taking the Tigers seriously as American League contenders.
Their playoff run last year was impressive, and the expectations were already raised entering the season. But as of Friday, they're tied with the Dodgers for the best record in baseball.
For tonight, the story begins with Tarik Skubal. Skubal has carved up the Rangers' bats in the past, and it also helps that they're injury-riddled at the moment.
Skubal's metrics remain elite, and he ranks above the 90th percentile in the following pitching metrics:
- Whiff Rate
- Strikeout Rate
- Walk Rate
- Hard-Hit Rate
- Fastball Velocity
This guy is pretty good. Skubal should cruise tonight through this Rangers lineup.
Although the Tigers' bats have put up substantial numbers against Corbin, I'm concerned about their offense tonight. They've been scorching hot at the plate lately, and they scored 21 runs combined through the doubleheader against the Rockies.
This isn't to say that their offense isn't a solid unit, but even the best teams in baseball can't sustain that type of success on a daily basis. Given that Corbin's numbers are better than I expected, the Tigers offense could scuffle a bit throughout tonight's contest.
The run line is my only look, as I can't justify laying -250 with any team in baseball.
Rangers vs Tigers Pick, Betting Analysis
Given that the Tigers offense is due for a cool-down, the under is an excellent play tonight. Skubal should do his part and stifle the Rangers, and Corbin will also hold his own.
If Corbin sustains his low walk rate and weak contact against, runs may be hard to come by tonight. I also see a lot of sharp money pouring across on the under, which makes me like it even more.
Corbin could easily get shelled tonight, but even if that's the case, I think it's very possible to see a 5-0 or 6-1 victory for the Tigers to keep this total under the number.
But still, his underlying metrics are legit, and I think he's being overlooked by the market.
Pick: Under 7.5 (Play to -125)
Moneyline
I don't have a bet on either side in this game.
Run Line (Spread)
Like the moneyline, I'm staying away from the run line between these two teams.
Over/Under
My best bet for this game is for both teams to stay under the total. Skubal shouldn't have a problem limiting an injury-ridden Rangers team, and Corbin has been better than expected in 2025 thus far.
