Allan Lem’s Rangers vs Pirates Preview
This is my way of backing Kumar Rocker and Mitch Keller to slow down two of the worst offenses in baseball.
Rocker has not been good (7.31 ERA), but his xERA indicates positive regression is coming (6.03), and several season-long projection systems have him closer to being a mid-fours ERA pitcher. He's coming off five scoreless innings against the White Sox and is -170 to go Under 2.5 earned runs, so I'm hoping he's turned a corner.
I'm also willing to back Keller, who has a 4.08 ERA but a 3.91 xERA, and is beginning to solve his prior home run problem (0.61 HR/9).
Texas is averaging just 3.63 runs per game, while Pittsburgh is at 3.21 runs per game. These are two of the worst five lineups in MLB.
I considered Under 8.5 for the whole game, but will bank on the talent of Rocker/Keller in the first five innings instead of relying on the bullpens.
