Nuggets vs Spurs NBA Preview
We're set to get one more regular-season clash between the Nuggets and Spurs on Sunday. Both teams have locked in home-court advantage for the first round of the playoffs, but plenty is up in the air ahead of this matchup. Quite a few key players are carrying injury designations ahead of tipoff.
The Nuggets have ruled out every starter but Nikola Jokic, who has played in 64 games this season and needs to appear in one more to qualify for major end-of-season awards. The three-time MVP isn't expected to take home any individual hardware, but has historically dominated Defensive Player of the Year favorite Victor Wembanyama in head-to-head matchups.
Jokic has now scored at least 40 points in three straight meetings with Wemby and is a threat to post another strong stat line if he takes on his usual workload.
Wembanyama secured his end-of-season award qualification with a 40-point performance against the Dallas Mavericks earlier this week, but hasn't been ruled out for Sunday, even though San Antonio has a firm hold on second place in the Western Conference standings.
Wemby, Stephon Castle and Devin Vassell are carrying injury designations. Rookies like Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant could be in for some extended run if one or more of those players are ultimately ruled out, so that's a storyline worth monitoring in this pairing.
There's no telling what to expect in this one, but the picture will become clearer when the injury report is final.
Luke Kornet (shoulder) has been ruled out for the Spurs, while Wembanyama (ribcage), Castle (foot) and Vassell (ribcage) are listed as questionable. Jamal Murray (shoulder), Aaron Gordon (hamstring), Christian Braun (ankle), Cameron Johnson (ankle), Tim Hardaway Jr. (knee), Spencer Jones (hamstring) and Peyton Watson (hamstring) have been ruled out for Denver.
Nuggets vs Spurs Predictions, Betting Analysis
De'Aaron Fox and Julian Champagnie are the only Spurs starters who have been confirmed as active for Sunday. The former Sacramento Kings point guard has taken a step back as a scorer, but can still get going when his co-stars aren't available.
Fox has averaged 23.9 points per game without Castle (14 games) and 24.6 points per game without Wembanyama (17 games) this season. Bettors should not be surprised to see his shot volume climb significantly if at least one of the aforementioned starters can't go.
It's best to lock this bet in while it's close to even-money, as the odds won't be nearly as favorable if the Spurs don't deploy their usual first line.
Pick: De'Aaron Fox Over 18.5 Points (-107)
