Magic vs 76ers NBA Play-In Tournament Preview
This is a very tricky game — and I would advise treading lightly.
Let’s start here: the 76ers are 21-23 straight up and 19-25 against the spread when Joel Embiid does not play this season. That number, alone, immediately made me look toward the Magic here.
However, when you look at games where the Sixers are home favorites without Embiid, Philly is 7-1 SU and 4-4 ATS.
Then, when you look at games where Embiid was out, but Tyrese Maxey and Paul George played, the Sixers are 7-3 SU and 6-4 ATS. That’s pretty promising.
Still, the Sixers are overvalued here on the full-game line. The market line based on Inpredictable.com power ratings with a standard 2.5-point homecourt advantage is actually Magic -0.8.
Orlando went 2-1 SU and ATS against the Sixers this season — and based on my power ratings, I lean heavily towards the Magic. It might even be a good buy-low spot for Orlando given the disaster that was their loss to the Celtics on Sunday.
But, the Magic are pretty broken. They are clearly losing faith in head coach Jamahl Mosley. Orlando is a team that finds ways to lose games — and that’s dangerous to back.
Magic vs 76ers Predictions, Betting Analysis
76ers Fist Half Moneyline
The Magic went 1-2 SU and ATS in the first half of their games against the Sixers this season. Additionally, the Sixers were 44-35-3 ATS in the first half this season overall, via EVAnalytics.com — while the Magic were just below .500 at 40-42.
Orlando’s transition defense ranks 8th, which helps in defending the Sixers aggressive guards like Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, and Quentin Grimes — but their pick-and-roll defense is only league-average.
That gives Philly an opportunity to win what could be more of an offensive game.
Over 222.5
I am once again playing an Over in a Play-In Tournament game, despite these games still being 16-10 to the Under overall — even after Tuesday’s games went 2-0 to the Over.
The Sixers’ offense is significantly worse with Embiid out, but so is the defense. The Magic's offense is inconsistent, but it does have some capacity — especially when the Sixers are lacking rim protection.
Both of these teams have real trouble protecting the rim, and that should lead to more downhill attacking. I project this game in the 230s. Even without great shooting, I think we’ll see another Over in this spot.
