Raptors vs Bucks NBA Cup Preview
The Raptors are coming into this game with a fundamental problem: they just can't shoot the basketball from the perimeter.
Even in their matchup against Denver last night, it was glaringly obvious they don't have the personnel to punish teams from beyond the arc. RJ Barrett was jacking up a bunch of threes, which isn't his natural game.
Immanuel Quickley and Scottie Barnes are guys who need to get downhill and attack the rim to be effective. Outside of Ja'Kobe Walter, there really isn't a reliable shooting component on this roster.
Without Kawhi Leonard in the mix, this is effectively just last year's Raptors team, and there hasn't been any substantive change to their offensive ceiling.
The Raptors might find some success inside, but they won't generate the sheer volume of points needed to blow past a high total.
I am going to be perfectly clear: the Bucks are an awful defensive basketball team. I don't know if you know this, but it's true—they are terrible on that end of the floor.
However, the Bucks are specifically bad in two distinct areas: defending the pick-and-roll and giving up a high number of three-point attempts.
The saving grace for Milwaukee tonight is that Toronto simply doesn't have the shooters to exploit that specific weakness.
Offensively, the Bucks haven't exactly been a juggernaut either.
Despite bringing in guys like Jaime Jaquez and Tyler Herro to theoretically boost the offense sans Giannis, Milwaukee currently ranks 29th in offensive efficiency.
Raptors vs Bucks Pick, Betting Analysis
This line is essentially daring you to bet the over because the Bucks are so bad defensively, but the Raptors can't actually make the shots required to capitalize on it.
I ran the numbers using a composite of last year's figures—because I don't want to build a total model purely off a tiny seven-game sample this season—and I project this game at 224.6.
Even if I strictly used this year's data, I still end up at 225, which is more than five points short of the market number.
The math and the tactical matchup both point to a relatively low-scoring affair here.
Pick: Under 230.5 (-114, DraftKings)
