I’m backing South Carolina ML here. Our model makes the Gamecocks -6.93 favorites, and I like how both the matchup and the scheduling advantage line up for them. Tennessee just put everything into knocking off Alabama and now has to travel to Columbia for its eighth consecutive game without a break. South Carolina comes in rested off a bye, with extra time to prepare for a team that could struggle to match last week’s emotional intensity. That Alabama win was impressive, but the Tide were also coming off a physical game against Georgia. I think this is a good opportunity to sell high on Tennessee. George MacIntyre has provided more stability at quarterback than Faizon Brandon, but this remains an extremely conservative passing attack. Among 146 quarterbacks with at least 85 dropbacks, MacIntyre’s 5.3 yard average depth of target ranks second lowest. Just 7.5% of his attempts have traveled at least 20 yards downfield, the third lowest rate among qualified quarterbacks. South Carolina has struggled against explosive passing offenses, ranking 97th in explosive passes allowed, but Tennessee hasn’t shown much willingness to consistently attack that way. The Vols would prefer to establish the run, and that means challenging a Gamecocks run defense that ranks inside the top 25. In its last game, South Carolina held Florida and Jadan Baugh to just 120 rushing yards on 38 attempts. Tennessee’s offense has usually been its strength in previous years, but that hasn’t been the case this season. On the other side, South Carolina can attack the more vulnerable part of Tennessee’s defense. The Vols are excellent at pressuring quarterbacks and preventing big passing plays, but their run defense has been much less convincing. Tennessee ranks outside the top 100 in explosive rush rate allowed and among the bottom 10 nationally in yards after contact allowed. The Gamecocks run blocking ranks inside the top five nationally, and their pass protection is also inside the top 15. We have to remember that this South Carolina offensive line is finally healthy again, and this will be just the third game with all five starters available. This is a very underrated unit when fully healthy. South Carolina should be able to establish the run here and create opportunities for Sellers through play action. I expect a rested South Carolina team to have success on the ground and force Tennessee to sustain drives without relying on explosive passes. Add in the potential letdown for the Vols and a model number of South Carolina -6.93, and I’m taking the Gamecocks to win.
