Cal vs UNLV College Football Preview
California Golden Bears Betting Preview: [Editorial Language]
It has been a very up-and-down 2026 campaign thus far for Cal in year one of a new regime under head coach Tosh Lupoi.
After dropping its first game to UCLA with the Golden Bears defense having allowed 45 points, California bounced back impressively over the next two weeks prior to its Week 4 loss to Clemson this past Saturday.
Despite its sluggish start, CAL QB Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele has been sensational, having already thrown for 985 yards in the air, in addition to seven touchdown passes.
Following a 2025 campaign that led to the Golden Bears’ rushing attack ranking near the bottom in the FBS in rushing yards, Washington transfer RB Adam Mohammed was brought in to bolster this new-look CAL offense, racking up 336 yards on the ground over the first four games of the season.
California’s air raid has been quite versatile, with five receivers having recorded over 100 yards on the season, with Rutgers transfer wideout Ian Strong leading the team in receiving with 250 yards thus far.
Golden Bear first-year head coach Tosh Lupoi has significant experience under his belt, having previously coached in the NFL for three different teams, and was instrumental in CAL’s boasting an impressive transfer-portal class this past offseason.
Lupoi heavily focused on California’s improving in the trenches, landing former Oregon 350-pound DL Jericho Johnson, in addition to edge rusher Solomon Williams – both of whom have been vital components to the effectiveness of the Golden Bears’ front seven in 2026.
That said, California’s defense is still a work in progress, having allowed opposing offenses 23.5 points on average over the team’s first four contests.

UNLV Rebels Betting Preview: [Editorial Language]
Like California, UNLV’s 2026 campaign has been a story of highs and lows in former Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen’s second season at the helm.
The Runnin’ Rebels have also split their first four games in 2026, but head into Week 5 with a ton of momentum, having just scored 38 points in a dominant victory over Akron.
Mullen adds a ton of recruiting experience to this UNLV program given his extensive experience landing transfer portal additions whilst coaching in the SEC at Mississippi State.
Several new faces join a UNLV program that has made three consecutive Mountain West championship game appearances, resulting in extremely high expectations for Mullen’s bunch after having won 30 games collectively over the last three seasons.
In by far the biggest move for Mullen’s Rebels in this past offseason, UNLV landed QB Jackson Arnold in the transfer portal after spending three seasons playing in the SEC, making 18 collective starts for Auburn and Oklahoma.
The UNLV Senior has thrown for 891 passing yards and five touchdowns over his first four games playing in Vegas.
Runnin’ Rebels RB Jai’Den “Jet” Thomas has picked up right where he left off, rushing for 337 yards thus far after having recorded 2457 yards and 33 TDs collectively throughout his first three years in Vegas.
The Runnin’ Rebels receiving corps features standout preseason All-Mountain West first-team selection WR Taeshaun Lyons and Oregon State transfer wideout Taz Reddicks.
Newly hired Defensive Coordinator Paul Guenther has done a decent job in orchestrating a major bounce-back effort for a UNLV defensive unit that ranked near the bottom of the Mountain West in both total yards and scoring defense in 2025.
2025 UNLV defensive coordinator Mike Scherer returned to coach the linebackers this season and brought along several key defensive additions, namely Holy Cross transfer Cam Santee, who has recorded 27 tackles over his first four games with the Rebels.
Preseason All-Mountain West defensive lineman Lucas Conti and safety Jake Pope lead a defensive unit that boasts a ton of experience. Pope has been phenomenal for this UNLV defense thus far, having already recorded 28 tackles, which leads the entire team.
It will require a stout defensive effort from the Rebels on Saturday afternoon to contain California QB Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele and the rest of an impressive Golden Bear offense.

Cal vs UNLV Pick, Betting Analysis
While there is no doubt that this Jackson Arnold- led UNLV bunch has a ton of weapons at its disposal on the offensive side of the football, its vast inconsistency defensively is some slight cause for concern heading into Saturday’s Week 5 matchup.
Though this Runnin’ Rebels defensive unit has had its positive moments over the course of the 2026 season thus far, UNLV’s allowing 44 points to North Texas in Week 3 is ringing off alarm bells in my head.
I am expecting a very closely contested battle on Saturday, and am willing to take a shot on the Golden Bears catching 3 points with -118 juice in a game I think California has a fairly good chance to win outright.
Pick: Cal +3
