Eastern Washington Eagles Betting Preview: Outmatched Up Front
Eastern Washington has experienced a program decline, suffering through four straight losing seasons after being one of the flagship programs in the Big Sky for many years.
Head coach Aaron Best has endured a lot of change in Cheney, WA, and the offense is coming off its worst statistical season in 10 years. Through three games, the Eagles have produced better numbers while already facing a conference opponent and a pair of Missouri Valley teams.
Quarterback Nate Bell has completed 64% of his passes for 781 yards and six touchdown passes. His two favorite targets are Wesley Garrett and Drew Carlson, who have caught a combined 31 passes already through three games.
They'll each garner a decent amount of the target share in this game, but the run game is going to have to be more consistent.
Bell is the team’s leading rusher with 159 yards on 40 rushing attempts, but I can't envision Eastern Washington wanting to run him frequently in this contest.
Washington has a strong defensive front that's made it tough on each of its first two opponents to run the ball, so Eastern Washington might struggle to sustain drives.
The defense hasn't been a strong suit for Eastern Washington, as it's giving up 410 yards per game through the first three weeks.
The stop unit has struggled to get off the field on third down, and teams are too easily moving the ball between the 20s against the Eagles, who have already faced 14 red zone trips against them.
The havoc numbers have improved, and the defensive line is making plays in the backfield, which will show in Big Sky league play, but this front is going to be severely overmatched by Washington.
Eastern Washington’s secondary has been prone to giving up explosive pass plays, and Washington should be able to find them this week.

Washington has won its first two games of the season by the slimmest of margins, as it's been one of the more disappointing teams of the young season for bettors.
The Huskies are 0-2 against the spread, and the offensive output looks nothing like what we saw from this group last season.
The offensive line has struggled to win at the point of attack, and the ground game has just one explosive rushing play.
Demond Williams Jr. looked rattled against both Washington State and Utah State, and the playmaking ability of the receivers appears to have dropped off.
This offense has to get itself going in the right direction in this game before Big Ten league play starts, so I expect the starters to play deep into the third quarter until the coaching staff is satisfied with the execution on the field.
The defense has been strong for Washington, as the Huskies are allowing just 12 points per game and 4.5 yards per play.
Six sacks and 16 tackles-for-loss have been registered, and many of those came in critical third-down situations, getting the defense off the field and forcing a punt or field goal attempt from the opposition.
Alex McLaughlin and Jacob Manu have been all over the field for Washington, which is allowing just 25% successful conversions on third down with only three trips inside the red zone.
Its first two opponents have averaged just 87 yards per game and 2.9 yards per attempt running the football, and I don't foresee Eastern Washington being able to register any rushing success in this game.
The defense is going to have opportunities on “third and long” to get off the field. So far, those tests have been passed.

This line opened with Washington listed as 42.5-point favorites in the contest with a total set at 57.5. The first-half total is listed at 33, and I'm going to take the over in the first half.
Washington will have an extreme size advantage in the offensive trenches, and the Huskies will run the ball better. Williams hasn't looked great this season, but he'll be able to make plays with his legs, and the situational execution will be better in this one.
Eastern Washington has a small defensive line, and the Huskies run game should open up deep shots in the play-action game for the offense.
Williams is going to start connecting on these deep shots, and I expect Chris Lawson, Dezmen Roebuck and Trez Davis to win the 1:1 battles against an Eastern Washington secondary that's giving up 8.7 yards per pass this year.
The secondary won't be able to hold up, and Washington should get the offense looking like what we expected to see in the season opener.
There's a concerted effort being placed on situational execution, and Washington is motivated to score touchdowns, something it's struggled with this season.
Jedd Fisch talked in his press conference about cashing in while in the red zone. Fisch challenged his group to execute and make plays around the goal line.
I expect the offensive line to play more spirited football and for the execution to be there for Washington to cash in with touchdowns rather than settling for field goals.
Eastern Washington isn't going to be able to run the football, so the Eagles are going to have to throw the ball often in order to stay on the field.
I expect the defensive line for Washington to apply plenty of pressure on Eastern Washington's Bell, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of first-half turnovers or quick possessions, which lead to short fields for the Huskies.
The sack and havoc plays will come, and the result should be quick possessions or turnovers that set Washington up for quick scores.
This game should get out of hand quickly, and 35-0 or 35-7 at the half is the most likely result I see happening.
