Florida Atlantic vs FIU Pick, Betting Analysis

I like the underdog Owls traveling down to Miami to take on their rival on Saturday.

FAU has won seven straight head-to-head meetings with FIU in the Shula Bowl, winning by an average of 30 points per game.

Hopefully, the Owls can bounce back from that disastrous season-opening loss against Maryland — especially after losing the turnover battle 6-0.

Quarterback Caden Veltkamp bounced back against Florida A&M, throwing for 300 yards and five touchdowns in a 56-14 win.

I expect FAU’s passing game to shine again on Saturday.

Meanwhile, I have questions about FIU's offensive attack.

Quarterback Keyone Jenkins has yet to throw a touchdown pass through two games. He has a rushing touchdown, but the passing game has left much to be desired — Willie Simmons’ offense continues to be too dink and dunk, which likely puts the Panthers into too many third-down situations.

Meanwhile, FAU’s third-down defense has been stout, holding opponents to a 30% conversion rate.

I think that’s where this game will swing.

There should be some empty possessions for FAU, while Veltkamp will pick apart the FIU secondary as long as the offensive line holds up (which it didn’t against Maryland). He’s comfortable spreading the ball around to six or seven different receivers.

Pick: FAU ML (+120, BetMGM)
