Penn State Nittany Lions Betting Preview: A Team In Transition

Penn State got back on the horse after four straight losses by beating Purdue 31-17. Quarterback Rocco Becht went back to keeping things simple, which the Nittany Lions desperately needed.

Prior to the Purdue game, Becht had thrown four interceptions in three games, two of those led to touchdowns, and the other two left the opposing team in scoring position. Penn State doesn't need to reinvent the wheel here. It's still a rebuilding program, which is why keeping it simple is paramount.

The offensive line has done a solid job at protecting Becht, ranking 47th in Havoc allowed, but the execution hasn't been there.

For one reason, it's because the weapons in the receiver room are nothing to write home about. Leading receiver Chase Sowell is solid, but beyond him, the receiver who's second in receiving yards is Koby Howard. And Howard only has 12 receptions, compared to tight end Andrew Rappleyea, who has 28 but 119 fewer receiving yards.

The run game is also largely unspectacular, with Carson Hansen being the bellcow, but it seems that the Lions are getting more bang for their buck when Cam Wallace gets handed the rock. Wallace is actually third on the team in carries, but he is averaging six yards per carry with three touchdowns.

PSU's defense has been strong against the pass, only allowing 141.7 yards per game; however, it does a terrible job against the run, allowing 154.9 yards per game.

Not only that, it's essentially a wash whenever Penn State lets its opponents into the red zone. Teams are converting on the Lions at a 95% rate in the red zone, which is 126th in the FBS.

Washington Huskies Betting Preview: By the Skin of Their Teeth

It was truly a marvel to see Washington pull away from Nebraska last week. With four minutes left in the game, Nebraska was given a 92.8% chance to win the game, as it led 10-3.

Then the Huskies scored on that drive, with a 10-7 lead. Two plays later, the Huskers threw a pick-six to Alex McLaughlin with 1:15 left in the game, allowing the Huskies to win it all. Just total mayhem.

It's crazy because up until that moment, Washington was brutal. It ran 10 drives and punted on eight of them.

As of right now, we still don't know who's starting at quarterback. Elijah Brown was largely ineffective last week, and then Demond Williams came in during the fourth quarter to spearhead the comeback. Williams has had a tumultuous season after a successful season last year, which sparked coach Jedd Fisch to replace him with Brown. But it seems like Williams gives Washington the best chance to win.

I mentioned how Penn State's defense can't stop the run, but Washington is way worse on the other end. The Huskies rank 115th in rushing Success Rate and average 87.4 yards per game on the ground, which is 133rd in the FBS.

Which is why I wonder about how Washington does when it's time to let it fly. Brown did not look good against Nebraska, and Penn State's secondary is strong. Not only that, Washington is ranked 74th in Havoc allowed while the Lions are 39th in Havoc created.

So whoever Washington trots out is likely going to be under pressure all game.

Penn State vs Washington Pick, Betting Analysis

These are two middle-of-the-road programs that can run hot and cold at any given time.

I'm leaning toward Penn State, though, because of Washington's uncertainties. The Huskies were handed a win in Lincoln, and while I don't think Penn State is a perfect program, it is better than what Washington is now.

We have Penn State to win by 6.4 points, and with this spread being at 2.5 points, I'm happily taking those points.

Pick: Penn State +2.5
