Sacramento State Hornets Betting Preview
I've been pretty vocal about Sacramento State and just how disastrous its move up to the FBS is for the program. Preseason win totals opened at 5.5, were bet down to 4.5, and I still leaned under at kickoff.
I got an in-person look at Sacramento State in its season-opener at Eastern Michigan and many of those priors were verified — the offensive line was terrible, QB Carson Conklin couldn't get anything going, and this just isn't a roster ready for FBS football.
Its defensive front looked pretty good, but given Eastern Michigan's performance in Week 2 against San Jose State, that might be due to a poor offensive line in Ypsilanti.
Sacramento State looks the part. During warmups, the Hornets towered over Eastern; everybody in the two-deep on the offensive line stands 6-foot-4 or taller, with a couple 6-foot-6+ bodies. But blocking communication was poor and Eastern Michigan completely overwhelmed this unit.
That's a serious concern given that Eastern Michigan did not go into San Jose and repeat that performance. In fact, SJSU controlled the line of scrimmage on offense.
Conklin sat last week with a broken wrist suffered in Week 0. Instead, it was Jackson Sharman who led a 52-0 blowout of Mississippi Valley State — perhaps Division I's worst team. Sharman was comfortable (no sacks taken) and effective against a terrible team (four touchdowns).
Neither Sharman nor Conklin threatens on the ground, which is an added problem for a team with porous pass protection.
Sacramento State needed a sack turned fumble-six to score in its debut FBS half — the offense didn't come close once. Though it gets the benefit of playing a cast of MAC defenses, it must first go through Fresno State and North Dakota State.
Given what those fronts are capable of, there's some ugly football on the table for Sacramento State.
Fresno State Bulldogs Betting Preview
Fresno State was completely out-classed by USC in Week 1, but that doesn't mean all tape should be thrown completely out.
Defensively, the Bulldogs were boom-or-bust, stuffing 13 of USC's 36 rushing attempts for two or fewer yards. But they also didn't log a single sack and allowed Jayden Maiava to throw for 340 yards in the 39-0 blowout.
QB Jayden Mandal was completely ineffective.
Mandal beat out Maryland transfer Khristian Martin –many expected the high-upside, athletic Martin to win the job — but completed just 7-of-16 passes for 77 yards, one interception, and he was constantly harassed in the game, taking three sacks (14 pressures).
Mandal didn't show great escapability and looked to be a complete step-and-a-half slower than the game moving around him. Head coach Matt Entz was clear about his support for the junior, naming him starter for Week 2 against Sacramento State.
Fresno's approach is clear: run the ball, control the clock, and win with defense. That's exactly the approach taken against USC and it resulted in a 39-0 shutout and 2-for-10 conversion rate on third down (116 total yards).
USC's defense is stout — a majority of the 24 points surrendered to San Jose State were well after the game was out of hand — but there wasn't one positive takeaway from that game offensively.
Defensively, Fresno played pretty admirably. It doesn't have the horses in the secondary to compete with Maiava and his star cast of receivers (many of whom returned to play limited snaps), but it did hold its own up front, limiting the Trojans to just 140 rushing yards.
I expect this kind of physicality and control translates to upcoming opponents like Sacramento State and Rice.
Sacramento State vs Fresno State Pick, Betting Analysis
If you got in early on the under here, congratulations. It opened way too high at 48.5 and was bet down an entire field goal early in the week; some shops offer it as low as 44.5.
Under was the play at open, but I can't recommend betting into that kind of market today.
Instead, I'm looking to play into two aspects: the weather (winds are expected to pick up for the game, with gusts over 20 mph) and Fresno's approach to offense. For the last two seasons, Entz has dictated the pace of his offense.
Last year, Fresno ran a play every 28.8 seconds (121st) and, this year, it only got off 44 offensive plays against USC (25.9 seconds per play was shortened due to playing from behind early).
This is an offense that will run the ball whether or not it can — 59% run play selection while trailing three scores is certainly a choice — and let that clock drain.
Because the market didn't move on Sacramento State, but the under moved quite a bit, Fresno State's team total remained high. Instead, Sacramento State took the majority of the team total movement.
Given the QB situation for Fresno and the stubbornness of the coach, both with the QB and with the scheme, 32.5 points is, frankly, too high.
Add in the wind factor, and this feels like a slog of a game. Low total, slow tempo (from both sides), and a demand to control the ground game translates to mediocre output. The strength of Sacramento State's team comes in its defensive line.
