San Jose State Spartans Betting Preview: Ahead of Expectations

San Jose State has been much better than anticipated; it competed very well in the season opener at USC before following that up with back-to-back wins over Eastern Michigan and Cal Poly.

Even in the loss against Fresno State, the defense was competitive and made things tough for the surging Bulldogs, who have won three straight.

This Spartan team was projected to be one of the worst in the country, but the defensive toughness has been there, and the offense is having success with more balance.

San Jose State plays 13 regular-season games and will need to win seven to get to a bowl game, but that goal is still a reality based on the opponents remaining on its schedule. The Spartans should be motivated this week coming off the bye week with extra time to prepare.

The San Jose State offense has been much more balanced than you would expect a Ken Niumatalolo offense to be. The Spartans are running the ball on 49% of their offensive snaps, and Jabari Bates has shined with 431 yards on the ground.

The rushing attack isn't explosive, but it keeps opposing defenses honest and opens up opportunities to throw the ball.

Luke Weaver has completed 61% of his passes with 1,032 yards through the air this season, but the explosive downfield passing hasn't been as proficient.

Carson Clark and Cooper Hoch lead the team in receiving with 240 and 239 yards, respectively, and each receiver has caught three touchdown passes.

The play of the offensive line has been much better than expected, as the havoc numbers and sacks have been kept low.

The defense has been much tougher than expected this season for the Spartans. We saw this in the opener, when this defense delivered a goal-line stand against USC and didn't allow a rushing play in excess of 15 yards.

San Jose State defends the pass well and ranks eighth nationally in explosive pass plays surrendered.

Hawaii is going to have to methodically grind for everything in this game.

Hawai'i Warriors Betting Preview: Stuck in Neutral

Hawaii has been about as disappointing as any other Group of 6 team this season, as the Bows were looking to ascend toward MWC contention but have failed to build on the momentum of last season.

The offensive line has been tough to watch, and Micah Alejado continues to battle nagging injuries which are affecting his play. A new receiver group hasn't caught on to the Run & Shoot system, and star receiver Pofele Ashlock hasn't played a snap this year.

Hawaii sits at 1-3 and if the Bows drop this game, they'll be in serious jeopardy of missing a bowl game, a common occurrence during the Timmy Chang era.

Alejado is one of the better quarterbacks in the Group of 6, but he can't stay healthy. While he's thrown for 1,020 yards this season in four games, his yards per attempt numbers are down and he's thrown just three touchdown passes.

The Rainbow Warriors are scoring just 18 points per game, and there's zero threat of downfield pass explosiveness.

The ground game has been sprinkled in more in an attempt to keep the pressure off of Alejado, who's been sacked 11 times this season and pressured countless other times.

Execution in the red zone has directly cost Hawaii in the win column, as well, as the Bows have scored just seven touchdowns in 16 red-zone attempts this year.

The Hawaii defense has actually not played too badly all things considered. This team was able to keep UNLV in check for three quarters and thwarted everything New Mexico State wanted to do a couple of weeks back.

Wyoming had some marginal success against Hawaii, but nothing eye-popping.

The biggest concern for Hawaii this week isn't the defensive performance as much as it is the personnel. Luther McCoy, Ha’aheo Dela Cruz, and Joenel Figueroa are out, and Jamih Otis is questionable, creating rotational problems for this defense.

San Jose State vs Hawaii Pick, Betting Analysis

This game opened with Hawaii listed as three-point favorites at home, with a total that opened at 57.5. The under has taken money this week, and I'm a part of that action.

I still like the under, and I would play it to 51.5, where it currently sits.

The Hawaii offense hasn't been efficient or explosive this season, and the production level is down significantly. The Bows have zero threat of a downfield passing prowess, and San Jose State is one of the best secondaries in the country in preventing pass explosives.

We saw Hawaii go on a nine-minute, 16-play drive against Wyoming, and those are the types of drives we should see in this game.

San Jose State is going to make Hawaii work on the offensive end for every yard.

San Jose State is running the ball much more, and the Hawaii defensive injuries create a situation where the run will look inviting in this game.

The Spartans aren't going to gash Hawaii on the ground, but the run game should be mixed in to create scenarios where the Spartans can stay on the field and move the ball well in this game.

The drives will be lengthy and could end in punts or field goal attempts, but the quick-strike offense will simply not be there, and San Jose State is going to run the ball more.

Hawaii has been terrible in the red zone this season, and I would expect that to continue.

Far too frequently the Bows have settled for field goals or been turned away empty-handed after moving the ball inside the opponent's 20-yard line. San Jose State allowed just one red zone trip against both Fresno State and Eastern Michigan.

Once the field gets compressed in “goal-to-go” situations, Hawaii is forced to throw the ball into tight windows, and Alejado just simply doesn't have the time to let plays develop. The result has been throw-away passes or sacks taken.

This series is an under-the-radar rivalry, and these two teams play for the Dick Tomey trophy. The last three times these teams have met on the Island, each of those three games has gone under the posted total with an average point total of just 41.

While I don't use historical trends frequently as part of my handicapping process, there's something here between these two teams and the perception of fast-paced, high-flying offense.

I think the play of these two defenses will shine and will likely determine who wins this lower-scoring bout.

Pick: Under 51.5
