Tulsa vs Tulane College Football Preview

Tulsa Golden Hurricane Betting Preview
Tulsa is fresh off the bye week, and while they sit at just 4-4 overall, there is no question about the improvement we have seen from this bunch in Tre Lamb’s second season. The blown leads and inconsistent late-game play have been frustrating, but the defense has shown up consistently and given this team a chance to win.
With the last four games being critically important for bowl-game eligibility and program-defining trajectory, I expect a fully locked-in group down the stretch.
Tulsa has been incredibly balanced offensively behind the running prowess of Damari Alston and Trequan Jones. These two have run for 817 yards and 10 touchdowns combined, and Tulsa has looked strong on the ground each of the last two weeks.
Quarterback Baylor Hayes is completing 63% of his passes with 10 touchdowns, and he is coming off his two best performances of the season.
The offensive line has played well, and the passing game has really started to develop for Tulsa. Oran Singleton, Javon Ross, and Jimmy Calloway are explosive receivers who can break away for an explosive pass reception any time they get their hands on the ball.
David Wells is also emerging, and this passing attack should be much more explosive than what we have seen at certain points this season. This group needs to be more consistent on third down, which has been such a problem for the Golden Hurricane this season.
The defense has somewhat tapered off after the hot start to the season. Early on, the defensive line was full of disruptors who would live in the backfield of the opponent, but some of that domineering play has faded in recent weeks. The front has been stout against the run and should be here in this matchup as well against a Tulane offense that grades out just 124th nationally in havoc allowed and 136th in rush play success rate. If this defense is motivated, Tulane will struggle to move the football.

Tulane Green Wave Betting Preview
Tulane has alternated wins and losses every week this season en route to a 4-4 start that has seen plenty of bizarre play and head-scratching results. The offense is not good, but the team continues to register explosive plays.
Without them, this offense cannot move the football, and putting quality drives together is not something frequently done. The team struggles consistently stacking successful plays together, and the offense struggles to cash in while in the red zone.
The quarterback play has been subpar, as Kadin Semonza was benched in favor of freshman Trace Johnson, who has thrown just two touchdowns in four games. Johnson played his best football last week against Charlotte in a game Tulane was very fortunate to have won in overtime. The Green Wave have used a running back by-committee approach as Jamauri McClure has been sidelined with injury much of the season. Johnnie Daniels, Maurice Turner and Jaylin Locas have split carries while helping Tulane run for 145 yards per game on the ground.
The Green Wave defense has taken a major step back compared to the stop-units we have grown accustomed to seeing in New Orleans. The havoc registered has not been game-changing or really all that prevalent. Tulane struggles, allowing routine successful plays on early downs, and the team has struggled on third down while allowing opponents to convert 50% of attempts.
Opponents are finding the red zone a lot, but the Wave has found ways to stop its opponents while inside the 20-yard line. Only 55% of opponent trips have resulted in touchdowns, and incredibly, 11 times teams have been turned away empty-handed against Tulane.

Tulsa vs Tulane Pick, Betting Analysis
This line opened at a pick 'em early, but Tulsa has taken money in the market, pushing this line out to -2.5. The total sits at 50.5. I am going to play Tulsa here.
Not all 4-4 teams are created equal, but thankfully with advanced analytics and tools like “Post Game Win Expectancy” and second-order win totals we can gain valuable insight as to what a team’s record “should be”. Tulane trailed in the fourth quarter of three of its four wins and has benefitted from defensive or special teams touchdowns three games in a row.
Tulsa has had games firmly in control in three of its losses and has routinely seen breaks go against them this season, resulting in games lost that should have been victories. Both elements of flukiness should revert back to the mean.
Beyond that, I am not confident in Tulane being able to move the football. The offense does not operate with consistency, and while the Wave rank among the FBS leaders in explosiveness, much of it has come at the expense of South Alabama, Southern Miss, and Charlotte, three of the worst defenses at the FBS level.
Tulsa has an explosive offense, but they have also been consistently good in early downs, having success and giving the team chances to convert third down, where the Tulane defense has been terrible this year.
I expect Tulane to struggle defensively in getting the Wave off the field, and even if drives do not result in scoring plays, punts and pinning the Wave offense down the other way will make it tough for Tulane to flip the field. Tulane has lost the field position battle in nearly every game this season, so if we avoid the fluky, nonsensical happenings, we should avoid Tulane putting points on the scoreboard.
This is such a critical game for Tre Lamb and one that could help shape the definition of what his tenure will look like at Tulsa. The team is very talented, and the Hurricanes will have the more talented quarterback, receivers, and defensive line.
These three units should have a significant impact, and Tulsa should win this game by a touchdown.
Pick: Tulsa -2.5 (-110, FanDuel)
