Few coaches have done a better job elevating a program than Clark Lea.
The days of Vanderbilt being a doormat in the SEC are long gone, and last year’s 10-win breakthrough proved the Commodores could have staying power as an upper-echelon team in the conference.
The challenge entering 2026 is sustaining that momentum after losing several major contributors, most notably Diego Pavia and Eli Stowers.
Vanderbilt has found a way to get to 3-0, even though it took one of the more dramatic finishes I've ever seen. If you haven't seen it already, stop what you're doing and go look up the end-of-game highlights of last week's win over NC State.
After escaping against the Pack, things only get more difficult as Vandy has to head to Jordan Hare to take on an Auburn team that will be in bounce-back mode.
The Vanderbilt offense remains a work in progress without Pavia’s experience and improvisational ability.
Freshman QB Jared Curtis has shown promise, completing 63.1% of his passes for 547 yards and four touchdowns, but he's also thrown two interceptions.
Junior Sherrill has emerged as his most dangerous target, averaging better than 18 yards per reception, while Sedrick Alexander has provided balance out of the backfield as a veteran runner.
The issue is that Vanderbilt hasn’t consistently turned scoring chances into points. The Commodores rank 78th nationally in offensive success rate and 110th in points per opportunity, some of that due to costly mistakes in the red zone.
Defensively, the Dores have been rock solid. They rank 18th nationally in defensive havoc and have consistently created the negative plays needed to compensate for an inconsistent offense.
This unit will give Vanderbilt a chance to hang tough at Auburn, and Lea deserves a lot of credit for establishing an identity on this side of the ball despite some roster turnover.
I have doubts about how it will translate on Saturday, however, as this will be the first road game of the year against a talented Auburn team in what is always a rowdy environment.
Auburn Tigers Betting Preview
Auburn started the Alex Golesh era with two victories before falling to a really good Florida team last week at Jordan Hare.
The defense got exposed, with the Gators going for nearly 500 yards of total offense.
Auburn was atrocious at home in the SEC throughout Hugh Freeze's tenure, so outside of just avoiding back-to-back losses, there's added urgency to get a win in this matchup.
USF transfer QB Byrum Brown is the operator of Golesh’s offense and the most dynamic player in this matchup.
Brown threw for 271 yards and three touchdowns against Florida, added 65 yards and another score on the ground, and helped Auburn produce three fourth-quarter scoring drives.
Brown also has plenty of help around him, as Jeremiah Cobb gives Auburn a dependable runner, and receivers Keshaun Singleton and Chas Nimrod have already become consistent targets.
I think this group has the potential to be one of the more explosive offenses in the SEC, and should have plenty of matchup advantages in this game.
On the other side of the ball, the defense must respond in a big way after a really poor showing last week.
There's still some talent here, and linebackers Elijah Melendez and Xavier Atkins have combined for nine tackles for loss and four sacks through three games.
Auburn needs to get after Curtis early and often, and force the youngster into trouble in his first start on the road in college.
I have a feeling it will, which should lead to a couple of turnovers generated.
Vanderbilt vs Auburn Pick, Betting Analysis
Vanderbilt has beaten Auburn the last two years, actually holds the all-time series record between the two schools 23-22, and absolutely deserves respect for what it's done the last couple of years.
But I love the Tigers in this one on Saturday afternoon.
Auburn has more experience at the quarterback position, more talent on the overall roster, the home field, and revenge on its mind.
Brown will be able to create problems with his arm and legs, and I think you'll see Golesh's team very motivated from the opening kick.
Vandy escaped last week, but it doesn't have the consistency or firepower to go blow for blow with Auburn on its home field.
Give me the Tigers by double digits. War Eagle.
