Vanderbilt Commodores Betting Preview: Trouble Finishing

Vanderbilt heads to Starkville at 3-5 after five straight losses, and while the Commodores have occasionally generated explosive plays through the passing game, I'm having a hard time trusting this offense to consistently sustain scoring drives on the road.

The Commodores are averaging 22.8 PPG and 342.8 YPG, including just 106.1 rushing YPG, which has made it extremely difficult to establish any offensive balance.

The underlying numbers aren't particularly encouraging.

Vanderbilt ranks 94th nationally in offensive Success Rate at 43%, while generating just +0.06 adjusted EPA/Play.

The biggest concern is the rushing attack.

Mississippi State has been considerably more effective defending the run than its overall defensive profile suggests, allowing just 116.5 rushing YPG.

That's a difficult matchup for a Vanderbilt offense already struggling to consistently create manageable third downs.

QB Jared Curtis has shown flashes, including completing 27-of-36 passes for 247 yards against Kentucky, while WR Junior Sherrill has surpassed 700 receiving yards this season.

However, the Commodores haven't consistently translated that individual production into TDs.
Vanderbilt is generating just 3.53 points per scoring opportunity, which is disastrous.

That's the type of finishing-drive inefficiency that can turn promising possessions into FGs or empty trips. I highly doubt we will see much scoring from Vandy on Saturday.

Mississippi State Bulldogs Betting Preview: Offensive Disaster

Mississippi State's offensive collapse has been one of the SEC's more dramatic developments, and the Bulldogs now face the reality of finishing the season without QB Kamario Taylor.

Before the injury, Taylor threw for 1,450 yards and 17 TDs while adding 159 rushing yards, giving Mississippi State the dual-threat production needed to consistently generate explosives.

Without him, the Bulldogs have been an absolute offensive disaster. Mississippi State has scored just 18 combined points over its last three games, getting shut out 31-0 by LSU, scoring 15 against Oklahoma and managing only three against Texas.

Mississippi State generated just 187 total yards, including 119 passing yards, while allowing seven sacks and converting only six of 18 third downs.

QB AJ Swann completed 12-of-15 passes for 97 yards before suffering an upper-body injury on a strip sack that Texas returned for a TD.

Swann spent the second half with his throwing arm in a sling, and his availability against Vanderbilt remains uncertain.

That could leave QB Parker Puckett operating the offense. Puckett completed just 3-of-10 passes for 22 yards against Texas, getting sacked five times while Mississippi State managed only 54 second-half yards.

Big yikes.

RB Fluff Bothwell provides some stability on offense, but even his presence doesn't solve the problems surrounding Mississippi State's OL and QB room. The Bulldogs haven't shown they can consistently sustain drives without Taylor.

Vanderbilt vs Mississippi State Pick, Betting Analysis

This total opened around 48.5, and I'm willing to play the under mainly because of Mississippi State's offensive situation. The Bulldogs have scored six PPG over their last three games, and Taylor isn't walking back through the door.

Swann's injury adds another layer of uncertainty, potentially leaving Puckett or another inexperienced QB to run an offense that has struggled with protection and negative plays.

That's particularly important for Havoc and Finishing Drives. Mississippi State allowed seven sacks against Texas, and its inability to avoid negative plays has repeatedly prevented possessions from developing into legitimate scoring opportunities.

Vanderbilt isn't exactly an offensive juggernaut, either. The Commodores rank 94th in Success Rate and generate just 3.53 points per scoring opportunity.

The obvious concern is Vanderbilt exploiting Mississippi State's vulnerable secondary, but it’s not like this Vandy offense has been an air raid all season.

The QB injuries, protection issues, and poor finishing-drive profiles provide more than enough reasons to expect another ugly offensive performance from both teams. I actually lean the Bulldogs, but I feel much stronger about the under.

Pick: Under 48.5 (-110, FanDuel)
