Republicans won all five of the last Texas Senate races, so James Talarico vs. Ken Paxton tests a long streak:

YearWinnerMargin
2024Cruz (R)+8.5
2020Cornyn (R)+9.6
2018Cruz (R)+2.6
2014Cornyn (R)+27.2
2012Cruz (R)+15.9

Final polling averages missed by three to four points in each of the last three races: Cruz led by 6.8 in 2018 but won by 2.6, Cornyn led by about 6.5 in 2020 but won by 9.6, and Cruz led by 4.4 in 2024 but won by 8.5.

Final surveys run from a 1-point Paxton lead to a 7-point Talarico lead, and the polling average has Talarico up 2.5 points. Talarico’s share runs from 47.6% to 51.3%, Paxton’s from 43% to 48.7%. Cost of living ranks as the top issue, and Talarico leads among voters who say higher prices hurt them.

Traders price Talarico as a 3-to-1 favorite, yet polling misses larger than his 2.5-point lead keep Paxton’s path open. Claim Polymarket promo code ACTION to trade whichever side the final price favors.

What Is Happening in the Texas US Senate Race?

Money, scandal and a missing debate shaped the final stretch. Paxton turned down every debate invitation, which made this the first Texas Senate race since 2000 without one. Republican groups funded almost entirely by Elon Musk spent more than $272 million.

Paxton suggested Talarico’s October flu absence hid a mental breakdown. Talarico denied it, and the facility named in rumors confirmed he was never a patient.

Talarico leads among urban and suburban voters, women, voters under 50, independents, and Black and Latino voters. Paxton leads among rural voters, men and voters over 50.

More than 7.4 million Texans voted early, 36% more than in 2022, and Sen. Ted Cruz warned Republicans risk losing every statewide race.

Paxton needs a big Election Day showing, and 40% of Republicans said they planned to vote today. He closed with rallies in Fort Worth and Tyler, while Talarico rallied in Houston.
