Cleveland Browns Betting Preview: A New, But Limited Era
The Browns enter a new era once again with Todd Monken taking over as head coach. While this team has found some nice pieces in the draft of late, they're still rebuilding and are expected to be among the worst in the league once again.
It doesn't help that they traded the best defensive player in football, Myles Garrett, either. While they got a nice young player in Jared Verse, he's still a clear downgrade.
Monken is a good playcaller on offense, but there's only so much he can do with Deshaun Watson under center.
Reports out of camp were mostly negative for Watson. He essentially won the starting role by default, as Shedeur Sanders didn't do enough to separate himself. It's a classic case of veteran deference.
With that in mind, I'm expecting the Browns to struggle on offense in this one, making it difficult for them to keep pace with the Jaguars.
Jacksonville Jaguars Betting Preview: Improvement on the Horizon?
The Jaguars are set for Year 2 under Liam Coen after surpassing expectations last season, finishing the year as one of the hottest teams in the NFL.
Quarterback Trevor Lawrence is fully immersed in Coen's system, showing significant improvement down the stretch last season.
He's been displaying symbiotic chemistry with Parker Washington throughout camp. Plus, Brian Thomas Jr. looks healthier and more engaged.
Not to mention that Travis Hunter is back healthy, set to play primarily as a corner, which could help the defense. This sets up a spot for the defense to have a huge game, as Deshaun Watson is the worst starting quarterback in the NFL right now.
To that end, it wouldn't shock me to see a blowout here.
Browns vs Jaguars Prediction, Betting Analysis
This line has moved from 7.5 to 8.5 for good reason.
The Jaguars are the vastly superior team and could blow the doors off the Browns in this one. I expect Watson and company to struggle to move the ball, with a few sacks and turnovers to boot.
With the Jags fully adapted to Coen's offense, their offense could be humming here as well, especially with Garrett no longer wreaking havoc up front.
As a cherry on top, here's an interesting trend: last season, the Jaguars were 7-2 against the spread (ATS) as favorites, covering by an average of 7.2 PPG.
All we need is a 9+ point win here, which is firmly in play in this spot at home. Lay the points with the Jags.
