For my top Panthers vs Cardinals NFL PrizePicks and Kalshi plays, I’m highlighting Kenny Pickett, Jimmy Horn Jr. and Corey Kiner.
Note: The three picks below I'm taking on PrizePicks — but one of them is also available on Kalshi.
As I wrote up in my Hall of Fame Game preview, Kenny Pickett has been a disappointment during the regular season — but he’s been one of the best preseason quarterbacks over the last few years. He owns a ridiculous 77% completion rate with a 6:0 TD:INT ratio in preseason action.
Pickett draws the start tonight, and I think he’ll be very efficient when he’s on the field; the problem is I don’t think he’ll be on the field very long.
My expectation is Pickett plays just 1-2 series before giving way to rookie Haynes King. If Carolina marches down the field for a touchdown on its opening drive, there’s a very real chance that’s it for Pickett. If the Panthers go three-and-out, he probably gets another series.
Ironically, his efficiency could actually work against him here.
I have Pickett projected for around 55 passing yards if he plays the entire first quarter, but I think there’s a decent chance he gets a quicker hook than the market expects if the Panthers accomplish what they want early. That leaves him more in the 40-50 yard range.
As always, preseason props are incredibly difficult to project because playing time is everything, and this is one where we’ll probably know whether we’re in good shape or dead within the first 15 minutes.
One obvious out for over bettors is if Haynes King were to get injured early, forcing Pickett back into the game.
That’s certainly possible, but it’s not something you can handicap around.
Similar to Pickett, I think Horn will be one of the better players on the field for the Panthers while he’s out there. He’s also the receiver I expect Pickett to trust the most.
Horn is basically a lock to make the roster, and with rookie Chris Brazzell out for the season, he could actually carve out a meaningful regular season role. Because of that, I wouldn’t be surprised if Carolina pulls him once Pickett exits.
Even if Horn catches a couple passes during the opening 1-2 drives, he isn’t exactly running a bunch of deep routes. He posted just a 5.0 average depth of target during last preseason, so his catches are more likely to come underneath.
A perfectly reasonable stat line could be something like 3 catches for 18 yards before calling it a night.
Even if Horn sticks around for a few snaps with Haynes King, I’m expecting King to lean heavily on his rushing ability, which naturally comes at the expense of the passing game.
In a weird way, Pickett and Horn are actually a correlated pair of unders. They’re almost too good to receive extended playing time in a game that’s primarily about evaluating third- and fourth-string players.
They could absolutely torch this bet by marching down the field twice before heading to the bench, but I think more often than not, we get bailed out by both players being pulled earlier than the market expects.
Unlike Pickett and Horn, I’m expecting Corey Kiner to get plenty of work tonight.
The Cardinals announced that third overall pick Jermiyah Love won’t play. James Conner and Tyler Allgeier also aren’t expected to suit up, and Trey Benson is banged up enough that I’m not expecting him to play either.
That essentially leaves Kiner, Bam Knight and Evan Hull.
Hull was only signed a couple of days ago and feels more like emergency depth, while Knight already logged plenty of preseason work last year. That makes Kiner the back I’m most interested in because Arizona should want a long look at him.
He also made the most of his preseason opportunities with the 49ers last year, averaging 5.7 yards per carry on 12 attempts while averaging an impressive 3.92 yards after contact.
I think there’s a realistic path to 9-plus carries tonight, and if that happens I like his chances of clearing 28.5 rushing yards. For a preseason prop, this feels like one of the higher-floor opportunities on the board.
