San Francisco 49ers Betting Preview: Fool's Gold

The 49ers are undefeated and boast a dominant 64% dropback success rate (12% higher than the No. 2 team), but their start has been largely schedule assisted.

San Francisco played the jet-lagged Rams in Australia — a game you can essentially throw out due to travel — followed by three straight home games against the Cardinals, Dolphins, and a Broncos team that couldn't generate any offense.

Now, the 49ers face their first true road test.

More importantly, Kyle Shanahan specifically reconfigured this offense in the offseason to beat Seattle's defense by acquiring Mike Evans, drafting De'Zhaun Stribling, and using Ricky Pearsall and Kyle Juszczyk on dash motions.

However, Evans can't separate at this stage of his career, Stribling is hurt, Pearsall is hurt, and Juszczyk is out 2-3 weeks with a knee injury.

The catalyst of San Francisco's run game is gone. Defensively, the Niners are also missing Nick Bosa and dealing with cluster injuries in the secondary.

Seattle Seahawks Betting Preview: Engineered to Stop Shanahan

The Seahawks are juiced 2.5-point favorites for a reason. Mike Macdonald flat out owns Kyle Shanahan and Brock Purdy.

Against Macdonald, Purdy is 2-4 with six touchdowns, nine interceptions, and a 75.0 passer rating. Against everyone else in the NFL, his rating is 105.

Macdonald's scheme keeps Purdy confined to the pocket, and nobody successfully runs on Seattle.

Seattle's defense was basically built in a lab to stop the Shanahan system, and the Seahawks even brought in Brian Fleury from San Francisco's staff to coordinate the offense.

While the Seahawks' run game has been sluggish, Sam Darnold and Jaxon Smith-Njigba should have plenty of opportunities against a depleted 49ers pass rush.

49ers vs Seahawks Prediction, Betting Analysis

We are getting Seattle cheap here because the market is enamored with San Francisco's schedule-inflated 4-0 start.

Mike Macdonald’s defense has a proven, historical edge over Brock Purdy, and the 49ers no longer have the healthy personnel (specifically Kyle Juszczyk and Mike Evans) required to counter it.

In the toughest road environment in the NFL, Purdy will make mistakes. I'm laying the points with the Seahawks -2.5.

Pick: Seahawks -2.5 (-120)
